In the summer of 1953, Shirley Jones had only one hundred dollars to her name and a firm intention to study nursing. Everything changed when she showed up at an open casting call in New York for the composers Rodgers and Hammerstein. That afternoon they were looking for a supporting voice, but they came across a natural soprano who made them rewrite the script on the spot.
She was offered a personal contract, something that had only been given before to Mary Martin. Jones didn't have to go through the regional theater circuit or take small parts on television. She made her film debut right away in the adaptation of Oklahoma! in 1955, playing Laurey Williams under the direction of Fred Zinnemann.
And the gamble paid off.
Her image as a wholesome girl with a crystal-clear voice fit what mid-1950s audiences wanted. She shot Carousel in 1956 and April Love in 1957, cementing an image as a naive heroine that seemed impossible to break. But Jones knew musicals had an expiration date and that her career needed a dose of reality to avoid fading into obscurity.
In 1960, Burt Lancaster called her about a project that no one in her circle approved of. The role was Lulu Bains in Elmer Gantry, a woman who ends up working as a prostitute after being seduced by a preacher. Jones had to fight against her own good-girl image to convince director Richard Brooks that she could handle the character's sleaziness.
Won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1961 after shooting one of the most raw scenes of the era in an improvised brothel. That award was a statement of intent. Jones proved her range went far beyond cornfields and romantic songs, though the industry still insisted on seeing her as America's sweetheart.
But movies began to change, and the great musicals disappeared from theaters.
She agreed to take part in The Music Man in 1962, a massive box office hit, but meaty dramatic roles in film started to dry up. Jones didn't sit around waiting for a call that never came. She understood that the new center of entertainment was the living room, not the darkened movie theater.
In 1970 she turned down the role of Carol Brady in The Brady Bunch, but soon after accepted the lead in The Partridge Family. Playing Shirley Partridge made her America's most famous mother for four years. The series blended family comedy with promotion of songs that actually hit number one on the sales charts.
Working alongside her real-life stepson, David Cassidy, created a dynamic that spilled off the screen. The production became a massive phenomenon that ended in 1974, leaving Jones in an enviable financial position but typecast once again in a maternal role. She spent the following decades alternating Broadway stage work with constant appearances on the small screen.
Television was the ultimate haven.
In 2006, she surprised critics with a bawdy comedic role in the film Grandma's Boy, moving far away from the polish of her years on television. In 2014, she appeared in several episodes of the series General Hospital, and in 2021 she contributed to the documentary Beyond the Legend, where she looked back on her career without a trace of nostalgia.
Shirley Jones turned 90 in 2024, holding on to the distinction of being one of the few actresses to have won an Oscar and a globally successful television musical. In 1961, her pay for winning the Academy Award was only a few thousand dollars.
