Si Man Yeung didn't need a pretty face to win over the Hong Kong industry. Her training at the Academy of Performing Arts set the pace for a career that prioritized control of the body and voice over red carpet glamour. For years, audiences pigeonholed her in physical comedy under the nickname Ha Tau. But behind that jester's mask, there was always a steel-hard technique.
The stage was her laboratory.
In 2007, she made a massive splash with stage productions that demanded exhausting, over-the-top performances. Although television brought her quick fame with TVB series, film took time to recognize that her gift for observation went beyond parody. In 2014, she appeared in Golden Chickensss and Delete My Love. That year, she filmed over seventy workdays across TV dramas and movie sets.
Her real breakthrough came with The Sparring Partner in 2022. In this film she played the sister of a killer with a restraint that chilled the blood. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2023. Film noir allowed her to shed the television mannerisms that had accompanied her for a decade.
Nobody expected that silence.
To prepare for the role, she spent three months studying real court transcripts. Her performance avoided cheap melodrama and focused on guilt and family trauma instead. It earned 40 million in local box office, exceeding all expectations for a low-budget crime drama.
In 2024 she decided to focus her efforts on creating original content for digital platforms. She founded her own production company so she wouldn't depend on the one-sided contracts of the major studios. Her focus also shifted toward managing copyrights and training new comedic talent.
Financial risk is her new measure of success.
In 2025, her focus shifted to directing actors on independent projects outside Kowloon's commercial circuit. Although she still keeps her presence in theater, her technical priority now is small-format audiovisual storytelling. The distribution contract for her latest recorded stage work was closed for a sum of 180,000 Hong Kong dollars.
