In August 1993, Los Angeles police arrested Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on charges of being an accessory to murder at Palms Park. Three months later, his debut album, Doggystyle, sold more than 800,000 copies in its first week.

That legal case ended in 1996 with a not guilty verdict orchestrated by Johnnie Cochran in the same courthouses as the O. J. Simpson case. Snoop Dogg was no longer just a protégé of Dr. Dre at Death Row Records, but a cultural anomaly capable of surviving the open war between the two coasts of American rap.

Few bet on his longevity.

After the murder of Tupac Shakur, he broke his contract with Suge Knight and took refuge in New Orleans under Master P's No Limit label. That move literally saved his life. It also opened the door to a field where few rappers of his generation dared to tread without faking their voice: the big screen.

The Wheelchair-Bound Thug and Auteur Cinema

His formal film debut came with cameo appearances as a chain-smoking character in Half Baked in 1998. But his acting turning point came in 2001, when Antoine Fuqua put him in a wheelchair for Training Day.

In that scene, Snoop played Blue, a crippled dealer who tries to escape by rolling down an alley before being cornered by Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. He shot the sequence without stunt doubles in just a few hours. His brief appearance conveyed a street tension that no method actor in Los Angeles could have replicated.

That same year, John Singleton gave him the antagonist role in Baby Boy, where he played Rodney, a petty ex-convict who terrorized Tyrese Gibson. Far from commercial self-parody, Broadus built a surly and believable villain.

Hollywood got the message.

The industry discovered that his presence filled the frame with an unusual economy of gesture. So commercial comedy directors such as Todd Phillips recruited him to play the sidekick Huggy Bear in Starsky & Hutch in 2004, a production that grossed 170 million dollars at the box office thanks to his laid-back charisma.

The business of parodying his own legend

Over the following decade, Broadus understood before anyone else that his public persona was worth more than the street credibility of the nineties. He lent his voice to family animated films, starred in direct-to-video stoner comedies, and took on outlandish supporting roles with no apparent filter.

In 2019, Harmony Korine brought him into independent cinema with The Beach Bum. He shared psychedelic scenes with Matthew McConaughey under the name Lingerie, playing a distilled, cynical version of his own myth in the Florida Keys.

Because Broadus's true craft has always been never seeming like an actor at work.

In 2022, he bought the brand and original catalog of Death Row Records, the label that nearly destroyed him three decades earlier, closing a relentless financial circle. In 2024, he produced and starred in the sports comedy The Underdoggs for Amazon MGM Studios, directed by Charles Stone III and rated R for explicit language.

The official budget for that film was $30 million, and studio executives ruled out a theatrical release, opting to launch it directly on streaming on a January Friday.
