Sophie Lowe was not born in Australia, but Australian cinema adopted her as if she were its greatest secret. She was ten years old when her family left Sheffield to settle in the Southern Hemisphere. It was there that modeling opened a door she soon chose to close in order to study acting at the McDonald College in Sydney.
The plan was simple: act or nothing.
In 2009, Rachel Ward was handed a complex role in Beautiful Kate. Playing a teenager caught in an incestuous relationship with her brother was a suicidal risk for a debutante. Critics nominated her for the Australian Academy Award, and her face began circulating through studio offices in Los Angeles.
But the American industry is a grinder of young talent that looks for repetitive molds. Lowe avoided being typecast by taking part in The Slap in 2011, a series that dissected the Australian middle class with unusual psychological violence. That wasn't Hollywood; it was pure gritty realism.
Her chance to lead a major production came in 2013 with Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. ABC was looking for a different Alice, less naive and more physical, capable of carrying the weight of the digital effects. The bet worked creatively, although the audience didn't go along with the experiment.
The series was canceled after just one season of thirteen episodes.
That sudden halt allowed her to return to smaller projects where creative control was real. In 2013 she shot Adore alongside Naomi Watts and Robin Wright, a film that unsettled the box office with its story of intertwined relationships between mothers and sons. Lowe understood that her place was on the margins of the system.
Under the alias SOLO, she released several music projects that she recorded at home. She wasn't chasing chart hits or world tours, because her priority remained the film set. So she balanced her recordings with genre films such as The Butterfly Tree in 2017.
In 2022, she took on the challenge of the historical epic Medieval. Playing Katherine in an action film about Jan Žižka meant months of physical training and shoots in extreme weather conditions in the Czech Republic. It was her biggest-budget project up to that point.
Horror cinema came knocking at his door too.
In 2024, she led the cast of The Red, an Australian production that blends suspense with supernatural elements in the desert. That same year she appeared in the series The Last Anniversary, produced by Nicole Kidman for the Binge platform. The contract was signed for a single closed season of six episodes.
