Summer H. Howell

Don Mancini needed an eight-year-old girl who could look a bloodied plastic doll in the eye without running off the set. He found her in Winnipeg. Summer H. Howell hadn't even planned on going to the casting call. She was tagging along with her brother Chase to an ordinary audition when a casting director asked her to read two lines on camera.

There were no tears on set.

In 2013 she made her debut in Curse of Chucky as Alice Pierce, the vulnerable niece whose mouth is sewn shut by the criminal doll. She was eight years old and had a cold instinct for tense shots without blinking. Most child actors end up swallowed by Disney Channel family comedies, but Howell chose to stay in the mud of night shoots. And in 2017 she returned as the same character in Cult of Chucky. By thirteen, she had already racked up more hours on set in latex prosthetics than half the genre's veterans. Mancini knew the actress could handle the physical demands of low-budget shoots and grueling schedules.

Hunting Knives Before Turning Sixteen

In 2020 came her real test with Hunter Hunter, a rural thriller directed by Shawn Linden in the frozen landscapes of Manitoba. Howell played Renée, a teenager raised by trappers who learns to skin animals and track wolves in the middle of nowhere. The shoot demanded twelve-hour days at 15 degrees below zero and relentlessly rough physical scenes alongside Devon Sawa and Camille Sullivan.

The Canadian wilderness did the rest.

Specialized film critics began to notice her restrained physical acting. Howell doesn't go for cheap tears or on-screen hysteria. Her performance style relies on a steady gaze and sharp silences that convey real danger. That film made very little at the box office but found a revered place in independent cinema.

That same year she alternated wild snow scenes with the teen drama Clouds, directed by Justin Baldoni for Disney+. But conventional sentimentality was never her favorite territory. So she returned to the shadows with the television anthology Channel Zero and the mystery film Spirit in the Blood in 2024.

Stephen King's Blood Cube

In 2024 she shot the slasher Time Cut for Netflix and the action thriller Normal alongside Bob Odenkirk. Nobody doubted her technical skill for surviving choreographed action sequences. But her big break came with a call from Mike Flanagan.

Flanagan was looking for a face capable of bringing new life to Stephen King's first novel in miniseries form. In 2026, Amazon Prime premiered the adaptation of Carrie, with eight episodes and Howell in the lead role of Carrie White. Replacing the memory of Sissy Spacek required more than acting technique. It demanded a painful shyness that could erupt into murderous rage in a matter of seconds.

Mike Flanagan took notice.

The production required weeks of rehearsals with harnesses for the telekinesis scenes and more than four hundred liters of fake blood made with corn syrup poured during the gym climax. Stephen King publicly praised the edit after reviewing the final cut. The actress's contract included a clause for a second installment in Vancouver with a fixed budget of forty million dollars.
