Solána Rowe spent her teenage years training in competitive gymnastics in Maplewood, New Jersey, before deciding that Olympic discipline didn't answer her life questions. She tried marine biology, dropped out of college halfway through, and ended up selling products at a cosmetics counter while recording vocal tracks late at night on her boyfriend's laptop.

In 2011, her best friend passed a homemade EP to the president of Top Dawg Entertainment, Terrence "Punch" Henderson, during a music festival in New York. It took the executive just three tracks to realize that this raw, vulnerable record had something special. Two years later, she was signed as the first woman on the payroll of Kendrick Lamar's label.

Nobody saw the blow coming.

The Breakthrough, Unfiltered

Over the following five years, Rowe built her creative identity through demos that blew up the classic verse-chorus structure. Her early works, See.SZA.Run in 2012 and Z in 2014, were sonic collages with atmospheric rhythms that threw traditional radio programmers off balance.

In June 2017, she released her debut studio album, Ctrl, after months of creative block and clashes with the label over delivery deadlines. The label had to confiscate the producer's hard drive because she kept compulsively tweaking tracks. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and sold more than three million certified copies in the United States.

Because the strength of that debut lay in its lack of artifice. Rowe laid bare infidelity, body image issues and failed relationships over beats that blended raw hip hop with 90s alternative rock guitars.

And the move paid off perfectly.

From the Recording Booth to the Silver Screen

Before stepping in front of the cameras, Rowe already understood music as a purely visual extension. In 2018, she collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on "All the Stars," the central track of the soundtrack for Black Panther, which earned her a direct Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

That narrative pulse was confirmed in December 2022 with the release of her second studio album, SOS. For the music video of her track "Kill Bill," directed by Christian Breslauer in 2023, the singer recruited actress Vivica A. Fox to pay frame-by-frame tribute to the bloody aesthetic of Quentin Tarantino and martial arts cinema.

So the leap to the big screen was only a matter of time. In July 2024, she shot her first leading film role in Los Angeles, in the comedy One of Them Days, produced by Issa Rae and directed by Lawrence Lamont. She shared the bill with Keke Palmer, playing Alyssa, a young woman trying to avoid a sudden eviction within less than twenty-four hours.

The film hit theaters in January 2025 and grossed 51.8 million dollars at the box office on a budget of fourteen million.

Lamont chose to shoot Rowe's comedic scenes with 35mm anamorphic lenses and natural afternoon light in Baldwin Village to emphasize the urban realism of the production.

Facts About SZA

Things you may not have known about SZA

Before pursuing music, SZA was studying marine biology and had no intention of becoming a singer, because she felt she didn't fit the stereotype of an artist.
She was the first woman to sign with Top Dawg Entertainment, the label associated with artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q.
Her stage name, "SZA," is inspired by the Supreme Alphabet, a lyric-interpretation system used in the Nation of Islam and other movements tied to hip-hop culture.
The recording of her first EP, "S," came about almost by accident: she started recording songs without having planned a music career.
She co-wrote songs for artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott, in addition to releasing her own material.
"All the Stars", his collaboration with Kendrick Lamar for the Black Panther soundtrack, earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song.
"Kiss Me More," featuring Doja Cat, set a record as the female collaboration that spent the longest time at No. 10 on the U.S. chart and earned her first Grammy.
In 2024, she received the Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, an honor reserved for songwriters with a significant influence.
SZA has said that as a child she considered herself a "freakazoid" and was fascinated by the mystical; she has also said that bodies of water inspire her.
