Since bursting onto the entertainment industry in South Korea, Yang Se-jong has shown an innate ability to blend into characters of opposite registers, earning the respect of critics and the fervor of international audiences. Born in Anyang in 1992, his career is an example of discipline and talent, establishing him as one of the most versatile performers of his generation.
Although his initial interest centered on taekwondo, a school scholarship led him to discover his passion for theater, which led him to train at the Korea National University of Arts. His official debut came in 2016 with the medical drama Dr. Romantic, where his portrayal of the young surgeon Do In-beom did not go unnoticed. However, it was his leading role in the science fiction thriller Duel (2017) that earned him the nickname "Monster Rookie." In this production, Yang Se-jong took on the challenge of playing three different characters, distinguishing each one through remarkable gestural and psychological nuances for a newcomer.
That same year, his popularity reached new heights with Temperature of Love, a romantic drama that earned him the Best New Actor award at the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards. His on-screen chemistry and natural approach to romance made him Korea's "nation's boyfriend," a status he reinforced with the comedy-drama Still 17.
Before fulfilling his mandatory military service, Yang Se-jong set out to challenge himself with the big-budget historical drama My Country: The New Age. His portrayal of Seo Hwi, a warrior caught in the political intrigue of the transition from the Goryeo to the Joseon era, showed his ability to lead period productions with grueling physical and emotional intensity.
After a period of reflection and training during his time in the military, his return to television was one of the most anticipated moments for fans of the Hallyu wave. His casting as the lead in Doona!, Netflix's adaptation of the popular webtoon, was a resounding success. In the series, he played Lee Won-jun with a vulnerability and warmth that resonated with global audiences, proving that his magnetism was still intact.
In the most recent stage of his career, Yang Se-jong has sought out projects that break away from his romantic leading man image and venture into darker, more complex stories. Notable is his role in Disney+'s ambitious production Low Life (also known as The Manipulated or Pine), directed by the acclaimed Kang Yoon-sung. In this crime drama set in the 70s, the actor plays a young man who gets drawn into the dangerous world of underwater treasure hunting, a role that demanded a striking physical transformation and a much rawer, more visceral performance.
His next steps in auteur cinema have also been confirmed, as he seeks to work with directors who explore social realism. His commitment to excellence and meticulous preparation for each role, including renting empty rooms to rehearse in solitude, ensure that Yang Se-jong will remain an essential figure in the Korean screen landscape for years to come. His career is no longer measured by potential, but by a solid track record of success and a versatility that seems to have no ceiling.
