In the Segovian village of Hoyuelos, in the mid-1940s during the postwar period, Isabel and Ana are two sisters, eight and six years old. Both go to the village's screening of Frankenstein, a film that leaves a strong impression on the younger girl. As they leave the theater, Ana keeps asking her older sister about the monster, what it is and what it can do. Isabel answers as best she can, while Ana is left with an unease that won't fade. The movie is directed by Víctor Erice and stars Isabel Tellería and Ana Torrent as the two sisters.

The four main characters share the same first names as the actors who play them, because the young Ana Torrent kept mixing up the names on and off screen.

Director of photography Luis Cuadrado was losing his eyesight while the movie was being shot.

At the San Sebastián Film Festival, where it won the first prize, some attendees booed the movie and others stomped the floor in protest.

Until 2022, it was the only film by a Spanish or Latin American director to appear on Sight and Sound's list of the 100 greatest films of all time.

Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa cited this movie as one of his hundred favorite films.

An American indie rock band takes its name from the movie: they are called The Spirit of the Beehive.

During filming, which took place from February 12 to March 22, 1973, Hoyuelos had 230 residents; Lotz's wedding brought together 40 guests from Australia, the Netherlands and South Africa.

The movie cost 60,000 euros at current exchange rates, sold 530,000 tickets and grossed nearly 300,000 euros, according to figures attributed to its production team.
