The season begins when human remains are found beneath the floor of a house being demolished. They have been buried for nearly four decades, and the team reopens a cold case to uncover what happened back then. DCI Jess James takes over Cassie Stuart's role at the head of the unit after two interim commanders. Her arrival is not easy: she clashes with DI Sunny Khan, who is dealing with personal grief. Together they must reconstruct the victim's identity and speak with her mother, with whom she had a strained relationship. Meanwhile, the list of suspects grows to four people.
