Hayley Mills was not your typical child prodigy. Her father was Sir John Mills, and her sister Juliet was already performing on London stages when she could barely read. In 1959, director J. Lee Thompson saw her playing in her family's garden and decided she was perfect for Tiger Bay.
That was no game.
She won the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer and caught the attention of Walt Disney. The tycoon wanted a face that embodied British innocence with a touch of rebellion. In London, the Mills name carried great weight, and in Hollywood they needed a European answer to their own child stars.
Disney offered her an airtight contract. In 1960, she starred in Pollyanna, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave her a special Juvenile Academy Award. She was the last person to receive that miniature statuette before the category disappeared for good.
The technique worked.
In 1961, she starred in The Parent Trap, playing twin girls with different accents. The split-screen technique was basic, but audiences bought the trick. The film made millions and made her the studio's biggest moneymaker for five years.
When Mills turned twenty, she wanted to break away from wholesome roles and catchy songs. In 1966, she accepted a part in The Family Way. The film included a brief nude scene shown from behind, which caused a scandal in the tabloid press of the time.
And she met Roy Boulting.
The director was twice her age. They married in 1971, and the industry didn't make it easy given the generation gap. During the 1970s, her film career declined in favor of British theater and television, where she found refuge in higher-quality, less commercial productions.
But fame has strange edges. In 1988, she accepted the role of Miss Bliss on the series that would later become Saved by the Bell. That decision brought her unexpected visibility among a generation that had never seen her movies from the sixties (and had no plans to).
She never stopped working, but her priorities shifted toward the stage. In 2021, she published her memoir, Forever Young. In the book, she details how she lost the fortune she had built at Disney due to a British tax law that taxed ninety percent of her child earnings.
In 2024, director M. Night Shyamalan brought her back to big-budget cinema in Trap. She plays an FBI profiler in a suspense thriller that leaves nostalgia far behind. It's a dry, direct role that doesn't go for the easy applause of older audiences.
For 2025, her schedule included appearing in the crime series Unforgotten. Filming of her scenes wrapped in the last quarter of the previous year under the supervision of the production company Mainstreet Pictures.
