James MacArthur did not choose film out of vocation but through direct inheritance. The adopted son of the great Helen Hayes and playwright Charles MacArthur, he grew up in a home where theater was the only religion allowed.
He made his television debut at just 18 years old.
Walt Disney saw in him the embodiment of the ideal young American. So he signed him to an exclusive contract that would define his early career and keep him away from the complex roles he had sought at the start.
In the late 1950s, he starred in films such as The Light in the Forest and Third Man on the Mountain. His face fit the wholesome family adventure cinema of the era, which valued solid values. But MacArthur wanted to be more than the good boy of the house.
In 1960, he filmed Swiss Family Robinson, which took in 40 million dollars at the box office at the time.
It was a massive hit.
Despite his youthful fame, he decided his path lay in more complex roles. He tried to break that clean-cut image in The Interns in 1962. But audiences preferred him in more controlled and less dark settings.
Leonard Freeman called him in 1968 for a pilot about a special police unit in Hawaii. The role of Danny Williams was not the main one, but it ended up being the emotional engine of the series. Jack Lord kept a stiff jaw, and MacArthur brought the humanity.
And so he endured eleven seasons in a row.
The phrase “Book ’em, Danno” slipped into everyday language across half the planet without him being able to foresee it. But the physical toll of filming in the islands eventually took its toll on his personal life.
In 1979 he decided that was enough.
He left the series a year before it ended for good, feeling his character had nothing left to say. He lost a fortune in salary but gained the freedom to return to the stage his mother had so often talked about.
After leaving national television, he turned to the theater and made occasional appearances in series such as The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote. He never sought to regain the level of fame he had in the 1970s. He preferred to invest in real estate and enjoy his family away from the spotlight of Los Angeles.
In 1997 he took part in a pilot episode for a possible return of Hawaii Five-O that never aired on a regular basis.
James MacArthur died on October 28, 2010 in Florida of natural causes. He was 72 years old and left an estimated fortune of several million dollars derived from his investments in Hawaiian land.
