Akira Kamiya was born in Yokohama in 1946 and never planned to become the voice of a whole generation of Japanese fans. He started in theater, but fate put him in front of a microphone in 1970 with a minor role in Mahō no Mako-chan.
It marked the beginning of a brutal physical endurance.
In the 1970s, giant robots dominated television, and Kamiya gave it his all as the battle cry in Getter Robo. Sound directors asked him for vocal strains that would have sidelined any other professional within months. But he endured.
In 1983, he appeared in Kinnikuman. Here, Kamiya showed he could move from absurd humor to epic combat without the seams showing. His ability to modulate his throat let him rack up hits that seem impossible for one person to handle today.
Shortly after, he lent his voice to Kenshiro in Hokuto no Ken.
Then Ryo Saeba appeared. In 1987, the premiere of City Hunter changed his public image, because it blended the tough guy with the comedic pervert. It was surgical precision work, so audiences accepted him right away.
Not everything was applause in the recording booth. In 2009, Kamiya announced on his personal blog that he was stepping down from the role of Kogoro Mouri in Detective Conan. The reason was a breach of trust in his contract and problems with pay for voice actors in the industry.
Because the pay system in Japanese voice acting is rigid and not very transparent.
It was a loud, explosive debut.
Despite the years, the industry kept calling him back for his signature characters. In 2019 he reprised his role in the film City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes, and he repeated the feat in 2023 with City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust.
The box office responded with 1,000 million yen during its first weeks in theaters in Japan.
Kamiya runs his own talent agency, Saeba Strategy, from his office in Tokyo.
