In 1981, a sharp, electric voice changed Japanese television forever. Mami Koyama stepped up to the microphone to bring Arale Norimaki to life in Dr. Slump, and the result was a cultural earthquake nobody saw coming.
The actress was not after technical perfection but rather a chaotic energy that would connect with the absurd humor of Akira Toriyama. And she nailed it.
That early success could have been a gilded cage for any voice actor. But Koyama decided her voice had much darker shades to explore after the series ended.
It was a risky bet.
Before the end of the 1980s, her voice had already dropped several octaves to move into adult drama. In 1988, she played Kei in the film AKIRA (Katsuhiro Otomo), bringing a composure that contrasted with the collective hysteria of the plot.
That same year, she worked on Legend of the Galactic Heroes under the direction of Noboru Ishiguro. The industry took note that this woman could leap from physical comedy to political thriller without missing a beat.
Throughout the 1990s, her name became associated with characters carrying complex psychological weight. Koyama stopped being the robot girl and became the femme fatale or the cold-blooded villain.
In 2006, she took on the role of Balalaika in Black Lagoon and delivered a masterclass in vocal authority. Her portrayal of a Russian mafia captain with war scars erased any trace of the sweetness of her early days.
And the industry once again bowed at his feet.
Many voice actors settle into a single type of role once they reach veteran status. Koyama did the opposite and sought out projects that demanded absolute control of the airwaves and of pauses.
Her arrival in the One Piece franchise in 2017 to voice Big Mom is a prime example of technical control. Shifting from childlike madness to pure terror within a single line requires a vocal strength that only decades in the booth can build.
Because talent without technique runs out, but she knew how to take care of her most important tool: her voice.
In 2023, she took part in the dubbing of Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, reprising her role as Vermouth (a character she has played for years). Production records from Toei Animation confirm that she remains one of the most sought-after voices for high-profile roles.
Her recording sessions are usually held during long days in which the actress rarely needs retakes to nail the director's intent. In 2024, her involvement in the Detective Conan franchise continued to add minutes of footage to the TMS Entertainment archives.
