Synopsis of Candy Candy

Candy Candy follows an orphan girl named Candice, known as Candy, who grows up alongside her best friend Annie at Pony's Home, an orphanage near Lake Michigan, in the early 20th century. When Annie is adopted by a wealthy family, Candy is heartbroken and cries on a hill covered in daffodils. There, a mysterious Scottish boy appears and tells her she is prettier when she laughs than when she cries. The young man hurries off, but leaves behind a happiness charm, which Candy keeps as proof that her prince was not a dream. She calls him the Prince of the Hill and wishes to find him again while trying to get by without her friend. The series, created by Kyoko Mizuki, aired in Japan on TV Asahi.

The series was affected by the legal dispute between Kyoko Mizuki and Yumiko Igarashi: a Japanese Supreme Court ruling in 2001 established that exploiting the work requires the consent of both, which blocked new licenses and reprints.
"Candy Candy" debuted with a 9.5% audience in Japan, below the expected 15%, but the network aired daily reruns during the broadcast, and viewership grew from the second quarter onward.
