The mathematician who preferred scripts

Al Jean entered Harvard at sixteen to study mathematics. He wasn't seeking glory in animation but solving complex equations. But fate pushed him toward the satirical magazine Harvard Lampoon, and his life changed there when he met Mike Reiss.

Writing comedy requires almost algebraic precision. Jean learned this early while writing jokes for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the mid-1980s. That period was a military-style training for the mind before leaping into the void of fiction.

And the formula worked.

In 1989, he was part of the original team that launched The Simpsons on the Fox network. What seemed like a filler experiment became a phenomenon that devoured audiences. Jean and Reiss took the reins as showrunners during the third and fourth seasons to refine the style that the whole planet recognizes today.

Those years defined the personality of Springfield. Under his leadership, classic films were parodied and social criticism was explored in depth without losing the rhythm of the visual gag. But in 1994 he decided it was time to try his luck with something of his own, and he left the show to create The Critic.

The return to the throne of Springfield

The venture outside Fox did not go as expected. Although The Critic is today a cult classic among television analysts, 1990s audiences did not connect with the cynical humor of Jay Sherman. So Jean returned to the home of the yellow characters in 1998 as a writer and executive producer.

In 2001, he regained the position of solo showrunner. He has held that role since season 13, and his name appears in the credits of more than half of the episodes produced in the show's history. It is a figure that astonishes any industry professional in Los Angeles.

Television is a business of endurance.

Many fans argue that the quality of the scripts declined after the golden decade. Jean ignores the noise of the internet and focuses on the mechanics of daily production. His ability to manage budgets and teams of writers has allowed him to outlast five U.S. presidents and several global economic crises.

In 2007, he co-wrote the script for The Simpsons Movie alongside a team of veterans. The film grossed more than $527 million worldwide. That financial success silenced, for a while, the voices calling for the show's cancellation due to pure creative burnout.

The era of short films and streaming

Disney's acquisition of Fox changed the rules of the game for Jean. Instead of fighting the entertainment giant, he decided to use its tools. Starting in 2021, he began producing special short films for the Disney+ platform that blended the Springfield universe with outside franchises.

In 2021, he released The Force Awakens from Its Nap, using the imagery of Star Wars. Months later he repeated the move with The Good, the Bart, and the Loki to bring Marvel characters into the mix. They are short pieces that work like luxury ads to keep the brand alive among new generations.

No one expected a cartoon series to last for decades.

Jean divides his time between the Burbank office and the editing rooms. In 2024 he oversaw production of season 35 while coordinating the dubbing of new themed specials. The pace of work has not slowed, even though the television viewing system has been turned upside down by the arrival of streaming.

His current contract guarantees original episodes through 2025. The production cost of each twenty-minute episode is around $5 million due to the salaries of the original voice cast. Al Jean still reviews every line of dialogue before sending it to the animation process in South Korea.
