Alex Russell didn't need years of empty auditions for Hollywood to notice his square jaw. In 2012, the film Chronicle put him at the center of the global map on a budget of just twelve million dollars. The success of that found-footage film was as unexpected as his ability to hold the close-up without blinking.
Many Australian actors arrive in Los Angeles with a backup plan up their sleeve. Russell landed with a degree from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney and a confidence that bordered on insolence.
That was a learning experience the hard way.
After flying through the skies of Seattle in his American debut, projects came along that aimed to capitalize on his classic leading-man looks. He took part in the remake of Carrie in 2013, playing the bully Billy Nolan. It was a gritty role, far from heroics, that allowed him to distance himself from the image of a teenager with superpowers the industry wanted to pin on him.
And then came the chance to work with Angelina Jolie.
In 2014 he shot Unbroken, playing Pete Zamperini. The production was a sixty-five million dollar undertaking that demanded an exhausting physical commitment. But Russell wanted more than just being in front of the camera. The actor has always shown an almost obsessive fascination with how film sets work behind the scenes.
In 2017 he joined the cast of Only the Brave alongside Josh Brolin. The film grossed just over twenty-six million dollars at the box office despite strong reviews from critics. The actor decided to diversify his bets before the phone stopped ringing with movie offers.
Television is often a golden cage for many film actors. Russell signed in 2017 to bring Jim Street to life in the CBS series S.W.A.T. What seemed like a temporary assignment became a steady job that lasted seven full seasons.
During this time the actor took the opportunity to step into the editing room and learn the mechanics of television pacing. He directed his first episode of the series in 2021, titled Reckoning. He repeated the experience behind the camera in 2022 and 2023, because his real interest was shifting toward technical storytelling and decision-making from the director's chair.
It wasn't all gunfire and car chases in Los Angeles.
Beyond the major networks' sets, he has maintained a steady presence in Australian independent film. In 2017 he starred in Jungle alongside Daniel Radcliffe, and in 2018 he appeared in Rabbit. These projects don't aim for mass box office, but they keep his name tied to stories with greater dramatic weight.
Russell ended his contract with the series S.W.A.T. in 2024, after filming his character's final episode in season seven. The actor accumulated a total of one hundred and forty-one episodes credited to the production before looking for new creative horizons.
