Portia Doubleday

Portia Doubleday grew up in a house where scripts were left on the kitchen table. Her parents were actors, and her older sister also chose the profession. So there was no mystical epiphany. It was simply what you did.

In 2009 she got the chance to co-star in Youth in Revolt alongside Michael Cera. She played Sheeni Saunders with a mix of coolness and charm that caught critics off guard. But before that, she had already appeared in a cookie commercial when she was only eight years old.

Mainstream movies were not her immediate priority.

The weight of the technical eye

In 2013 she took part in the remake of Carrie, playing antagonist Chris Hargensen. It was a tough shoot under the direction of Kimberly Peirce. That same year she had a small but notable role in Her by Spike Jonze. And indeed, Doubleday prefers working with directors who have a very specific vision of the frame.

Angela Moss's role in the series Mr. Robot changed her career in 2015. Over four seasons, she explored the moral decline of a character who started out as the ethical center of the plot. Sam Esmail demanded almost robotic technical precision in every take, and she responded with absolute restraint.

Television gave her the space that movies denied her.

During the years the series aired, she turned down several romantic comedy roles. She was looking for projects that questioned how we perceive reality. So she focused on building a career based on expressive restraint and mastery of silence.

Managing media silence

In 2020 she joined the cast of Fantasy Island. The Blumhouse Productions horror film grossed 48 million dollars worldwide despite negative reviews. Portia Doubleday has always kept a careful distance from the Hollywood press.

She prefers to live in Los Angeles without taking part in the constant party circuit. In 2024, her work focuses on independent projects and running her own production company. The budget of her first major studio film was 18 million dollars.
