Kaitlin Doubleday never had to look for movies, because movies were already in the family living room. The daughter of Frank Doubleday and Christina Hart, she grew up in Los Angeles surrounded by scripts and costume fittings. Her father was the character actor directors called when they needed a villain with real presence.
At eighteen, she landed a role in Catch Me If You Can.
Steven Spielberg chose her in 2002 to play Joanna. It was a dazzling start that put her opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in one of the biggest productions of the decade. But the industry doesn't hand out anything because of your last name, and the following years were filled with supporting roles in procedural series.
She appeared in one-off episodes of Cold Case and CSI: Miami while looking for a foothold in independent film. In 2005, she joined the cult comedy Waiting…, sharing the screen with Ryan Reynolds. That low-budget movie about the restaurant underworld was her first real taste of commercial success.
Television gave her the stage that film grudgingly denied her. In 2015, she joined the cast of Empire to bring Rhonda Lyon to life. That FOX musical drama became a mass-market hit that overnight changed how the public saw her.
She played Andre Lyon's wife for four seasons. Her character brought a necessary coldness to an environment of excess and hip-hop music. Her character's death in 2016 closed a fundamental chapter in her visibility in the American market.
And then came the change of register.
Right after her time with the Lyon clan, she joined Nashville in 2017. There she played Jessie Caine during the show's last two seasons. It was a smart move to avoid being typecast as the femme fatale roles that often pursue actresses with her look in Hollywood.
The TV market changes fast, and Doubleday found a steady home in Hallmark Channel and Lifetime productions. In 2019, she starred in Christmas at the Plaza, and in 2020, she played a real-life killer in Poisoned Love: The Stacey Castor Story. These projects guarantee a loyal audience in the cable market.
It wasn't all TV drama.
In 2021, she took part in the comedy High Holiday, and in 2022 she led The Great Holiday Bake War. Her projects keep a line of straightforward productions for home viewing, with controlled budgets and fast shoots. In 2024 she filmed The Magic of Lemon Drops under the direction of Maclain Nelson.
The production was shot on location in Utah over three weeks of intense work. The screenplay of this last film is based on the novel by writer Sandra Byrd.
