From Asphalt to Athens's Screens

Alexis Georgoulis did not seek the spotlight on purpose. He was studying to become a civil engineer at the National Technical University of Athens when theater crossed his path by accident. That decision to enroll in the Jasmine drama school in 1993 changed the course of his life forever. The young man from Larissa had a presence that the camera picked up before the stage directors did.

In 2001, Greek television found in him a face that stopped the country every week. The series Eisai to Tairi mou was the trigger for an explosive fame that was hard to manage for an actor who still felt like an outsider in the industry. **That success reached screen shares above 60%** in some episodes of the season.

It was an absolutely risky bet.

But Georgoulis was not content to be the heartthrob of the Balkans. In 2004, he starred in and co-wrote the scripts for Erastis Ditikon Proastion, a production that performed like clockwork in the ratings. So he decided it was time to try his luck beyond his natural borders. He knew the Anglo-Saxon market demanded a toll he was willing to pay.

The Conquest of Corfu and the Global Market

His international breakthrough came in 2009 with the film My Life in Ruins. He filmed alongside Nia Vardalos and Richard Dreyfuss in a production that aimed to replicate the formula of Greek romantic comedy on a large scale. And although critics were harsh about the script, his career abroad had no turning back. But it was in 2016 that British audiences fully embraced him.

Her role as Spiros in The Durrells ran for four seasons, until 2019. The character gave him global visibility, which he used to make an unexpected leap into institutional politics. Georgoulis understood that his public image was an asset he could directly capitalize on at the ballot box.

Then politics devoured the actor.

In the May 2019 European elections, he won a seat as a member of the European Parliament for the Syriza coalition. He **earned 121,000 individual votes**, which allowed him to sit in the European Parliament within the Left Group. During that period, he balanced his legislative work on the Committee on Culture with occasional appearances on the Greek version of the TV show Your Face Sounds Familiar.

The Brussels Sinking

On April 17, 2023, his political and public career suffered a total collapse. A complaint alleging sexual harassment and assault, filed years earlier in Belgium, came to light and led to his immediate expulsion from the party. Georgoulis denied the accusations from the very first moment (attributing them to a political maneuver), but the reputational damage was irreversible at that point.

Belgian justice requested the lifting of his parliamentary immunity to proceed with the formal investigation. This administrative process was completed in June 2023 with a unanimous vote in the European Parliament. From that moment on, the actor focused on his legal defense while his acting projects were left in commercial limbo.

And the industry doesn't forgive a long silence.

In 2024, Georgoulis's professional career became intermittent and tied to small local productions in Greece. Brussels prosecutors keep the case open under case number 2023/OB/04. **The cost of his legal defense fees** is estimated at five-figure monthly sums, according to sources close to his circle in Brussels.
