Julianna Guill grew up in North Carolina among sheet music and local stages. In 2009, her life changed with a role many would have turned down for fear of being typecast. She played Bree in the reboot of Friday the 13th, and a line about her physique went viral before the term even existed.
It was an explosive but dangerous start. However, she decided she didn't want to be just the victim of a killer in a hockey mask. So she began taking on projects in television where the tone was radically different.
Nobody expected a horror movie to be her ticket in.
In 2010, she starred in Glory Daze as Christie DeWitt. The series was set in the 1980s and allowed her to move away from screaming roles and into college comedy. The show lasted only one season (ten episodes), but it helped casting directors see her as a solid supporting actress.
And the gamble paid off.
Appearing in a big-budget production doesn't guarantee lasting fame. In 2011, she took part in Crazy, Stupid, Love, sharing the screen with names like Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. She didn't have the lead role, but her on-screen presence became a constant in Los Angeles offices.
After that project came small parts in cult favorites. In 2012, she shot The Apparition alongside Sebastian Stan. The film was a critical and commercial flop, with dismal box office numbers. But Guill kept up her pace, hopping between TV pilots and low-budget independent films.
In 2016, she briefly joined the Marvel Universe in Captain America: Civil War. She played Tony Stark's personal assistant in a short but necessary scene for the Stark Industries storyline. It's a detail many overlook when reviewing her filmography.
Steady work matters more than fleeting fame.
Her real stability came with long-running series. Between 2014 and 2015, she played Becca Riley in Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. It was her first real opportunity to develop a character over several seasons without the pressure of being the lead.
In 2018, she signed on to The Resident to bring Jessie Nevin to life. Her story arc in the Fox medical drama lasted until 2023 (including occasional appearances after her character's death). It was on this Atlanta shoot that she managed to establish herself financially, outside the constant audition circuit.
In 2021, she took on the role of Marybeth Pickett in the series Joe Pickett, based on the novels by C.J. Box. The show was filmed on natural locations in Canada to simulate the landscapes of Wyoming. Paramount+ canceled the series in October 2023 after airing its second season.
