Alia Bhatt was born in London in March 1993. She holds a British passport, but her career belongs entirely to Mumbai. She is the daughter of director Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan. In 2012, she landed her first leading role in Student of the Year after beating out 500 hopefuls in an audition.

Audiences first saw her as just another heir to the Indian studio system. The press of the time focused on her youthful image and her supposed lack of dramatic experience. But the response came quickly.

In 2014, she shot Highway under the direction of Imtiaz Ali. That road trip in a cargo truck broke her image as a upper-class girl and put her on the map at international festivals. Critics stopped seeing her as a marketing product and started analyzing her as a method actress.

The industry realized Bhatt played in a different league.

The Weight of the Surname and the Dramatic Risk

In 2016, she played a migrant worker in Udta Punjab. For this role, she shed any trace of conventional glamour and worked on the accent of rural Bihar. She won her first major Indian academy award, and doubts about her ability to transform were put to rest.

Then came the big-budget projects. In 2018, she starred in Raazi as a spy married to a Pakistani officer. The film had a budget of 12 million dollars and multiplied its box office net earnings tenfold.

Her partnership with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali in 2022 marked a turning point in her career. In Gangubai Kathiawadi, she played a woman sold to a brothel who ends up leading the Kamathipura district. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, and European press praised her ability to carry a three-hour political drama.

Commercial success stopped being a coincidence.

Expanding into Production and the Global Market

In 2021, she founded her own company, Eternal Sunshine Productions. The actress decided to diversify her assets and take control of her scripts. Her first bet as a producer was Darlings in 2022 (a black comedy about domestic violence), which was sold directly to a streaming platform for a multimillion-dollar sum.

In 2023, she made the leap to English-language cinema with Heart of Stone. She shared the screen with Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan in an action production filmed in various locations across Europe. Still, her creative priority remains the film industry of her home country.

The numbers speak for themselves.

In 2024, she released Jigra. In this action thriller, she serves as executive producer, and the film is directed by Vasan Bala. Filming wrapped in Singapore during the winter months with a crew of more than two hundred professionals.

In 2026, Love & War is set to premiere. The project marks her professional reunion with Bhansali, and she will share the bill with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. The contract calls for a shooting schedule of 200 days of intensive production.
