The risk of a shortened surname

Ranveer Singh Bhavnani arrived in Mumbai after studying at Indiana University and decided he didn't need the surname so his stage name would sound more direct. In 2010, the production company Yash Raj Films was looking for a fresh face for Band Baaja Baaraat, and he showed up with an energy that caught the casting directors off guard.

He landed the role of Bittoo Sharma after an audition where he was asked to dance and act like a street kid from Delhi. That release brought in modest numbers during its first few days, but word of mouth from audiences saved the production from being forgotten.

And the gamble paid off.

His creative partnership with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali began in 2013 with Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. That was where the actor started physically transforming for each shoot, because he understood that Indian audiences wanted more than just a pretty face.

During the shoot for Bajirao Mastani in 2015, he isolated himself in a hotel room for three weeks to find the voice of the Maratha warrior. That obsession with the method cost him a shoulder injury that halted production for several months.

In 2018 he played the villain Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat. Critics pointed out that his wild stare was the real driving force behind a film that faced boycott threats and political delays before reaching theaters.

But it wasn't all historical intensity.

With Gully Boy in 2019, he stepped into the shoes of a rapper from the Dharavi slums. He recorded his own songs for the soundtrack, and the film ended up representing India in the Oscar race that year.

The Box Office Slump and a Return to Color

The release of 83 in 2021 posed a logistical challenge due to global health restrictions. Despite good reviews for his portrayal of cricket captain Kapil Dev, the final box office take did not meet the initial investors' expectations.

Complicated projects followed, such as Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Cirkus in 2022. Both titles came and went from theaters without much fanfare or acclaim, forcing the actor to rethink his purely commercial script choices.

In 2023, he got his commercial momentum back with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani alongside Alia Bhatt. The film, directed by Karan Johar, earned more than 350 million rupees in its opening weekend in international markets alone.

Singh is a high-risk asset.

The Legacy of Major Franchises

The announcement of his casting in Don 3 ahead of 2025 sparked a wave of protests from Shah Rukh Khan fans. Replacing a living legend of Asian cinema in an action franchise is a high-risk financial move for the production company Excel Entertainment.

In 2024, he appeared in Singham Again as part of Rohit Shetty's police universe. His character Simmba provides the comic relief in a production with shooting budgets exceeding 25 million dollars per installment.

The contract for the action film Dhurandhar was signed in the second half of 2024, with a shoot spread across India and various international locations.
