The breakout of Nagma Khatoon

Richa Chadha arrived in Bombay cinema with no godfathers or famous surnames. Her debut in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! in 2008 was barely a hint of what was to come. But it was in 2012 that her name was etched into the industry's memory with the release of Gangs of Wasseypur. In that five-hour criminal epic, she played Nagma Khatoon with a ferocity that stunned casting directors.

She accepted the role of a mother in a large family when she was barely over twenty. It was a risky decision, because in Bollywood that label often condemns young actresses to oblivion or to supporting roles as an aunt. Chadha preferred the risk of a complex character over the comfort of being the hero of the moment's love interest.

Richa Chadha never wanted to be just a pretty face on a billboard.

In 2015, the film Masaan took her to the Cannes Film Festival. The movie received a five-minute standing ovation and two technical awards. There, she played Devi, a woman trapped by social stigma in an India that still punishes female sexual freedom. That work confirmed that her range didn't depend on makeup or shouted dialogue.

The industry in the mirror

Her run in the comedy franchise Fukrey in 2013 showed she could carry commercial box office success without giving up her identity. The character of Bholi Punjaban moved away from the usual female stereotypes in Indian comedy films. She was a foul-mouthed, powerful villain who didn't need any man's approval to dominate Delhi's underworld.

And the gamble paid off.

But the road wasn't always upward. In 2017, she took part in Jia Aur Jia, a project that came and went from theaters with more embarrassment than glory and scathing reviews. Chadha has acknowledged in several interviews that the shoot was a miscalculation. Still, she used that setback to reassess her priorities and focus on scripts with a more evident political edge.

In 2019, she starred in Section 375, playing a lawyer in a courtroom drama about sexual assault. The film sparked an intense national debate because of its raw honesty. Chadha tends to choose projects that force the viewer to take a side instead of simply being consumed like popcorn entertainment. Her screen presence relies on a tense gaze and a delivery that avoids unnecessary embellishment.

The move to the production office

Creating Pushing Buttons Studios with her partner Ali Fazal changed the rules of her own career. It was no longer about waiting for the phone to ring with a good offer. In 2021, they began developing their own projects that aimed for an international aesthetic and a storytelling style far removed from the codes of Mumbai's major studios.

The production of Girls Will Be Girls in 2024 was her biggest success behind the camera. The film won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival, and distribution rights were sold in multiple European territories. Chadha personally supervised the post-production process in studios in France to ensure the sound met the standards of top-tier festivals.

In July 2024, her first daughter was born, and the actress paused her promotional commitments for a few months. Her role in the series Heeramandi, released that same year, delivered an unprecedented visual spectacle under the direction of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Filming her dance scenes required ten hours a day of physical training over several months of preparation.

The production of her next feature film as a producer has a budget of 2.5 million dollars from mixed funding between India and the United Kingdom.
