Ally Maki didn't start out seeking applause on a film set. At 14 years old, she was already in a van touring much of the United States with a pop group called The Valli Girls. It was a period of lopsided contracts and lots of glitter that taught her how the industry really works from the inside.
And the bet didn't pay off that well.
Although music wasn't her final destination, that experience allowed her to land in Los Angeles with thicker skin than most aspiring actors. Between 2009 and 2012, she spent her time building up episodic roles in shows like 10 Things I Hate About You or Franklin & Bash. Those were the days of auditions where being the only Asian face in the room was the norm, not the exception.
Her luck changed in 2016 when she signed on to Wrecked. In this parody of Lost, she played Jess, a role that demanded constant physical energy over three seasons. Shooting on location in Puerto Rico under a brutal sun gave her the experience needed to handle comedic roles under extreme technical conditions.
But her real breakthrough happened inside a sound booth.
In 2019, Pixar called her to voice Giggle McDimples in Toy Story 4. The character was barely a speck of dust next to Woody, but her rapid-fire delivery stole the spotlight from supporting characters with much more screen time. That contract changed her earnings and pulled her out of the cycle of generic cable TV auditions.
In 2023, she landed the project she was looking for to break away from cartoons. Randall Park called her to star in Shortcomings, a film that dissects the neuroses of the Asian American community in California without falling into the usual clichés. Adrian Tomine's script pushed her to work on a dramatic restraint she had not yet explored in mainstream film.
In 2018, she founded Asian American Girl Club, a platform born to fight for authentic representation that has gone on to partner with mass-market brands. In 2024, she joined the cast of the third season of Hacks, where she shared scenes with Jean Smart in one of the most awarded productions on recent television.
But her career isn't just about waiting for her agent to call.
In 2024, she voiced one of the main characters in the animated series Exploding Kittens. The production contract included specific clauses on the intellectual property rights to her digital likeness for future developments on the Netflix platform.
