Amalda Liz didn't need big headlines to make her mark on the industry. Her arrival was quiet and methodical. Trained at the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático y Danza de Euskadi (Dantzerti), she built her technique far from the Madrid spotlight. There, she learned that the body communicates as much as the voice.
And that restraint became her signature.
Many actors seek applause through excess, but she prefers observation. During her early years in Basque theater, she refined a listening skill she would later bring to the screen. She wasn't chasing instant fame. She preferred to understand how a scene works from the inside.
In 2017, she appeared in the film Handia, directed by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño. It was a brief appearance that helped capture the tone of an era. On that shoot, she realized that film demands a different kind of patience than the stage. The camera captures thought before words.
Her career took a turn with projects tied to collective memory. In 2020, she joined the cast of Patria, the HBO adaptation of Fernando Aramburu's novel. Her natural presence added a much-needed touch to a story charged with political tension and family grief.
The industry took notice of her.
Shortly after, in 2021, she starred in Maixabel by Icíar Bollaín. In this film, she played the daughter of one of ETA's victims. The role demanded a mix of fragility and toughness that Liz delivered without artifice. She managed to convey the weight of grief without resorting to easy tears or rehearsed gestures in front of the mirror.
Working with Bollaín taught her to see cinema as a social commitment. For her, acting isn't just about dressing up. It's about lending your face to realities we sometimes prefer not to look at head-on. So her name began to come up in casting directors' shortlists looking for authenticity.
In 2023, director Paul Urkijo chose her to star in Irati. The film posed an unprecedented physical and emotional challenge in her career. Playing a mythological being in the forests of Navarre meant night shoots and extreme weather conditions. The shoot lasted eight weeks in the rain and intense mountain cold.
The mud was real.
In this production, Liz showed she can carry the weight of an epic narrative. Her performance as a creature tied to pagan nature avoided the clichés of the fantasy genre. But it wasn't just about aesthetics. The actress had to learn dialogue in ancient Basque to lend authenticity to a story set in the 8th century.
Before filming, she reads the script looking for the cracks in her character. She isn't interested in flat roles or women who only serve as a foil to the male hero. That's why she chooses projects where identity and territory play a specific role in the plot.
In 2024, she worked under Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño on the series Cristóbal Balenciaga for Disney+. She played one of the seamstresses in a Paris workshop. It was a supporting role that demanded technical precision with her hands and just three lines of dialogue in French.
