Amiah Miller didn't need a single line of dialogue to catch Hollywood's attention. In 2017, she played Nova in War for the Planet of the Apes, and her gaze was enough to carry the emotional weight of a 150-million-dollar blockbuster. Matt Reeves was looking for a pure presence and found it in a girl who was just beginning to understand how the industry works.
It was a lucky break she had gone looking for.
Before reaching that point, she went through the usual Los Angeles circuit. In 2014, she made her TV debut in the movie Clementine, and shortly after she appeared in one-off episodes of teen series. Still, her profile fit drama or horror better than sitcoms.
In 2016, she took part in Lights Out. David F. Sandberg's film earned nearly $150 million worldwide on a minimal budget. Miller played the young version of Teresa Palmer's character and showed she could handle the tension of the genre without the usual tics of child actors.
Her work on set with Reeves changed her working methods forever.
For months, she trained to communicate exclusively through facial expression and body language. The motion capture process surrounding Andy Serkis pushed her toward an organic, almost theatrical performance, where the digital environment could not distract her from genuine emotion.
Breaking out of the box-office child star label is usually a slow process in the American industry. In 2020, she shot The Water Man under the direction of David Oyelowo. In this production, she took on a role with a heavier load of dialogue and an aesthetic that moved away from the polish of her earlier work.
But the market changed, and she sought projects that demanded a different kind of physical effort. In 2024, she took part in Hold Your Breath alongside Sarah Paulson. In this psychological horror thriller set in Oklahoma in the 30s, she had to face real dust storms and a suffocating atmosphere that tested her endurance on set.
And the gamble paid off.
Critics praised her ability to avoid being overshadowed by figures of Paulson's stature. Her character required a mix of vulnerability and suspicion, which Miller handled with a poise unusual for someone born in 2004. Big studios soon came calling again for espionage and pure action projects.
In 2025, she joined the cast of The Amateur to play the daughter of a CIA cryptographer in an international revenge thriller. Filming for this 20th Century Studios release marked her return to big-budget productions with global distribution. The film is written by Ken Nolan and was shot in various locations across Europe and the United States.
