Aml Ameen was born in Camden Town in 1985. His first big break didn't come in a Los Angeles office but on the streets of London, filming Kidulthood in 2006. That role as Trife gave him the visibility needed for the British industry to take him seriously.
Before that, he had already performed on the West End stage alongside stars of the caliber of Judi Dench. But it was social cinema that put him on the radar of international casting directors.
Then came the move to another continent.
In 2014, he played Alby in The Maze Runner. It was his first real foray into the Hollywood studio system, and the film grossed more than $340 million worldwide. That project allowed him to stop being a niche London actor and enter the machinery of big-budget blockbusters.
In 2015, he joined Sense8, the ambitious Netflix series from the Wachowski sisters. He played Capheus during the first season and quickly won over global audiences. But in 2016, news broke that he had abruptly left the production of the second season over creative differences with the directors.
No one expected him to walk away from a hit series at the peak of his career.
That decision could have buried his career in the United States. But Ameen chose silence and focused on projects where he had more control over the material. In 2018, he took part in Yardie, the directorial debut of Idris Elba, where he recovered the raw acting intensity that made him stand out early in his career.
Because Ameen has always preferred risk to the comfort of a long-term contract.
In 2020, he joined the cast of I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel's series that dissected sexual consent in the digital age. His performance as Simon confirmed that his range worked just as well in adult drama as it did in youth action.
In 2021, he decided he had waited long enough and wrote, directed and starred in Boxing Day. It was the first Christmas romantic comedy starring a Black cast in British film history. The movie was inspired by his own family experiences and allowed him to explore storytelling from the other side of the camera.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, he took on the challenge of playing Martin Luther King Jr. in the film Rustin, produced by Higher Ground. He shared the screen with Colman Domingo under the direction of George C. Wolfe. For this role, he worked obsessively on his accent and body language to move away from a historical caricature.
In 2024, he played attorney Roger White in the Netflix series A Man in Full. The show was filmed entirely in the state of Georgia and had an estimated budget of $100 million to recreate the high-society world of Atlanta.
