Amy Jackson arrived in India in 2010 without knowing where Madras was on a map. She was seventeen and held the Miss Teen World crown, which in theory was only supposed to get her walking runways in Europe. But director A.L. Vijay found her photos on a website and decided that this teenager from Liverpool was the ideal lead for Madrasapattinam.
She didn't speak a word of Tamil. She also couldn't dance the impossible choreography that South Indian cinema demands. The shoot was a total culture shock, with Jackson memorizing dialogue phonetically while wearing heavy period costumes under the Chennai sun.
And the gamble paid off.
The film was a massive box office hit, and local critics were fascinated by her ability to fit into such an unfamiliar production system. In 2012, she made a bid for Bollywood with Ekk Deewana Tha. The film did not have the same commercial impact, but it helped her face stop being an exotic curiosity and become a priority for the major studios in Bombay.
The real turning point came in 2015 with the release of I. Under the direction of Shankar, one of Indian cinema's most ambitious filmmakers, Jackson underwent an unprecedented visual transformation. The project took nearly three years and required her to shoot in extreme locations in China and spend hours in prosthetic makeup sessions.
Her biggest technical challenge came in 2018 with 2.0. In this science fiction sequel, she shared the screen with Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar. She played Nila, a humanoid, and for the role she had to learn to move with a mechanical stiffness that avoided any human quirks. The production had a budget of 75 million dollars, a figure that placed it among the world's biggest blockbusters.
It was a period of military-style discipline.
Unlike other British actresses who try their luck abroad and return after a short time, Jackson stayed. She learned the ins and outs of an industry that produces more than a thousand films a year. Above all, she understood that her value lay not only in her looks but in her physical endurance on film sets that are often logistical battlefields.
In 2017, she decided it was time to work in her own language. She landed the role of Imra Ardeen on the TV series Supergirl. This move let her break into the American market without giving up her roots in Asia. It was a calculated transition that helped her avoid being typecast as the damsel in distress.
Her personal life also began to take up space in the British press. In 2024, she married actor Ed Westwick in a ceremony on the Amalfi Coast after several years together. This high-profile union did not slow her career in India, where she remains a draw for action cinema.
In 2024, she released Crakk and Mission: Chapter 1.
In this latest film, she plays a British prison guard, a role that required intense training in martial arts and stage combat. Filming took place mainly on location in London and Chennai. The film earned 3.5 million dollars in its first week in Indian theaters.
