At fifteen, Anne decided her last name weighed too much. She didn't want to be Ken Watanabe's daughter when she walked a runway. So she erased the family connection from her casting profiles and introduced herself to the world simply as Anne.
That decision as a teenager set the pace for everything that followed.
She walked the runways in New York and Paris for labels like Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld. But the fashion world soon felt too small for her. In 2007, she made the leap to screen with the TV movie Tengoku to Jigoku. It wasn't smooth sailing, since in Japan being the daughter of a Hollywood star often overshadows your own talent in the eyes of the harshest critics.
In 2013, Japanese public broadcaster NHK entrusted her with the lead role in Gochisousan. It was a risky move. Playing Meiko, a woman obsessed with cooking in postwar Japan, demanded a physical restraint that few actresses of her generation could handle with ease.
And the gamble paid off.
The series reached audience shares above 22% on average. That success pulled her out of trend magazines and into living rooms across the country. But Anne didn't settle into the sweet heroine role the industry had prepared for her. In 2014, she starred in Hanasaki Mai ga Damattenai, playing a bank employee who takes on corruption within her own institution.
Her presence helps. She stands 174 centimeters tall, which gives her a natural authority in front of the camera in Japanese cinema.
Her personal life was upended in 2020 by a media-fueled divorce that dominated the headlines for months. Rather than feeding the noise, she chose silence and technical work. In 2022, she made the decision to move to France with her three children.
She sought physical distance from the Tokyo industry.
Despite the distance, she kept taking on large-scale projects. In 2022, she appeared in Kingdom II: Harukanaru Daichi e, playing Purika. It's a massive production based on a manga, with a production budget that topped one billion yen.
In 2024, Anne returned to the stage with an adaptation of Our Little Sister. The play was staged at Theater Cocoon in Tokyo. Her contract included a strict privacy clause covering her international travel between Europe and Asia. The production closed its tour with 98% occupancy across all performances.
