A photo taken by a fan in Fukuoka during a local event in May 2013 destroyed any chance of anonymity for Kanna Hashimoto. The image went viral on Japanese forums under the title "the miracle idol," at a time when social media had not yet monitored every second of fame.
Hashimoto was part of Rev. from DVL, an idol group that rarely left its home prefecture. But that photo pushed agencies in Tokyo to look south. Kadokawa Pictures offered her her first major leading role in 2016 with the reboot of Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation.
The Japanese industry has no patience for a lack of charisma.
On that shoot, Hashimoto had to learn to fire a real machine gun while keeping the expression of a high school student. The film was not a massive box office hit, but it helped casting directors realize her face worked on the big screen.
Yuichi Fukuda trusted her to play Kagura in the 2017 adaptation of Gintama. This is where she broke her porcelain doll image. Hashimoto agreed to pick her nose and pull grotesque faces in front of the camera.
That decision allowed her to escape the niche of actresses who are only good for posing.
Because Japanese audiences value the ability to laugh at yourself. Between 2017 and 2019, she took part in projects such as The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. and Kaguya-sama: Love is War. In the latter, she played a cold heiress who grossed more than $20 million in her home market alone.
Her name went from an internet phenomenon to a guaranteed source of income for studios. But overwork began to take a toll on her voice, which became noticeably hoarser over the years.
It wasn't all sunshine.
In 2020, production of Signal 100 revealed a darker side of her range under a director who went for gratuitous gore. The film received mixed reviews for its excessive violence. But Hashimoto was already thinking about the stage, where she could prove her weight as a performer.
In 2022, she took on the challenge of playing Chihiro in the stage version of Spirited Away produced by Toho. The production demanded absolute physical stamina. She shared the role with Mone Kamishiraishi, and critics praised her boundless energy during performances at the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo.
In 2024, the public broadcaster NHK chose her to lead Omusubi, the morning series that sets the pace of mornings across the country. Contracts like this usually come with very strict conduct clauses that limit actors' personal lives during the months of filming.
The sponsorship deal Hashimoto signed with an alcoholic beverage brand in 2023 sparked debate over her youthful image. In the end, the company kept the agreement after confirming that her beer drinking was a trait accepted by her adult fans.
Production of the film Saint Young Men in 2024 confirmed that her partnership with director Yuichi Fukuda remains intact after nearly a decade of collaborations. The marketing budget for this project exceeded the usual standards for Japanese comedy.
