Mayu Hotta showed up for her audition with the Amuse agency in 2014 with the shyness typical of someone from a province like Shiga. She wasn't after instant fame, but she did want a place in an industry that tends to chew up teenagers before they learn to deliver their lines. In 2015, she landed her first role in the film Solomon’s Perjury. It was a low-key debut that taught her that in Japanese cinema, respect is earned in the silences.
Before moving to Tokyo, she studied ballet for years. That physical discipline shows in the way she walks in front of the camera and how she holds long takes without blinking. But the path wasn't a straight line. In her early years, she played one high school student after another, many of whom barely had a name in the script.
The Japanese entertainment industry doesn't give second chances.
In 2017, she appeared in the series War of Series and began to shed her image as a filler actress. Her face started appearing in fashion magazines, and in 2020 she became an exclusive model for Non-no. This stage was key to casting directors seeing her as more than a pretty face for school dramas.
The turning point came in 2019 with her portrayal of Ai Hayasaka in the adaptation of Kaguya-sama: Love is War. Playing a personal assistant with a split personality required a gestural control that Hotta executed with mechanical coolness. She managed to steal scenes from the leads, which opened the door to projects with greater dramatic weight.
That same year, she shot Prison 13 under the direction of Kotaro Watanabe. It was her first leading role in a feature-length psychological thriller. The film was shot in a suffocating environment, and she had to carry the full emotional weight of a plot based on the Stanford prison experiment.
And the gamble paid off.
Starting in 2022, her name began appearing in NHK's major historical productions. In the NHK taiga drama The 13 Lords of the Shogun, she played Hime no Mae and showed she could handle archaic language and heavy kimonos as naturally as jeans. The series' average audience topped 12% in the Kanto region.
In 2023, she took on a major challenge in the series Ooku: The Inner Chambers. Playing Iemitsu Tokugawa marked a shift in her public image, as she embodied a woman who must pass herself off as a shogun in an alternate Japan. It was grueling physical work that required an imposing presence and a much deeper voice than she normally uses.
But Hotta didn't stay stuck in period drama. In 2024, she joined the cast of Anti-Hero to play a lawyer in a legal drama that questions the morality of Japan's judicial system. She worked alongside Hiroki Hasegawa and had to learn technical dialogue packed with complex legal terminology.
Audiences were quick to recognize her gaze.
In 2025, she voiced the character Chinatsu Kano in the anime adaptation of Blue Box. This project marked her entry into high-level voice acting for a franchise from Weekly Shonen Jump. Filming the movie Kyua in 2024 also marked a return to auteur cinema, on a production budget limited to the standards of Japanese independent film.
Her exclusive contract with the Amuse agency was renewed following the box office results of her latest appearances. The production of Anti-Hero used Sony Venice 2 cameras to capture the texture of her skin in the close-ups in the courtroom.
