Aoi Morikawa stacks cups with surgical precision in front of Japanese television cameras. It's not an editing trick, and there are no hidden wires on the set. On the variety show Sore tte!? Jissai Dou nano ka, which aired between 2019 and 2024, the performer demonstrated an almost superhuman ability to learn.
She mastered archery, juggling and gambling games that take professionals years to perfect. And she did it in just a few minutes of filming, under the stunned gaze of the expert guests. That's why Japanese audiences nicknamed her Wild Speed Morikawa.
She got everything on the first try.
But her origins don't lie in entertainment shows; they lie in the printed pages of fashion magazines. In 2010, she won the Miss Seventeen contest and became part of the publication's regular roster of models. There, she learned to control her image before making the definitive leap into professional acting.
In 2012, she made her film debut in Love To Reach You. It was a modest start that barely hinted at the technical coldness she would bring to her later characters. Because Morikawa doesn't seek the easy empathy of the viewer through tears.
The Japanese industry often devours its young talent with startling speed. Aoi Morikawa avoided that burnout by choosing roles that broke with the sweet-girl image her past as a model had imposed on her. In 2014, she worked on The World of Kanako under the direction of Tetsuya Nakashima.
That film changed how Tokyo casting directors saw her. She was no longer just a pretty face appearing on monthly magazine covers. But film doesn't forgive obvious mistakes.
In 2015, she decided to end her exclusive contract with Seventeen magazine to focus on acting full time. It was a risky move that many saw as commercial suicide. So she began taking roles in productions across radically different genres to avoid being typecast.
Her role as Mary Saotome in the 2018 adaptation of Kakegurui marked a turning point in her working method. The character demanded exaggerated gestures and a manic energy that bordered on the grotesque. Morikawa used that freedom to build an identity of her own, far from the usual conventions of national television.
And the gamble paid off.
Unlike other actresses of her generation, she prefers absolute control over emotional improvisation. In 2021, she starred in Kakegurui Twin, where she revisited her most famous character with much more evident technical maturity. Critics praised her ability to sustain long close-ups without losing dramatic tension.
During 2023, she appeared in the sports drama Gekokujo Kyuji, playing a woman with a much more restrained emotional range. It was a necessary counterpoint after years of explosive characters. Restraint is also part of her regular acting toolkit.
In 2024, the production of Machi no Tomoshibi confirmed that filming of her scenes was completed in just forty calendar days. The contract required full availability for voice post-synchronization sessions at the Shinjuku studios. The final budget for the project came to 150 million yen.
