The accident that launched a career

Mayu Matsuoka entered the industry by way of a family miscalculation. At eight years old, she tagged along with her younger sister to a talent audition, and the agent, after passing over the lead candidate, decided the older sister had more potential in front of the camera.

And the plan backfired.

For years she worked as a support girl on the children's program Oha Suta starting in 2008. But her real training didn't happen on television sets; it came from quietly watching the supporting actors around her. Matsuoka didn't seek immediate stardom and preferred to build a résumé of small roles where intensity outweighed screen time.

In 2013, the series Amachan gave her the national visibility she needed with the Japanese general public. She played the leader of an idol group with a mix of rigidity and vulnerability that caught the attention of casting directors for auteur films.

The explosion of acting nerve

Her real change of pace came in 2017 with Tremble All You Want. It was her first lead role in film, and the movie rested entirely on her shoulders. She played Yoshika, a woman obsessed with fossils and with an unrequited crush from high school, breaking away from the image of the accommodating actress.

The industry stopped seeing her as a promising newcomer.

Her performance in that film earned her the Best Actress award at the Tokyo International Film Festival. But Matsuoka didn't settle into the offbeat romantic comedy; she sought out projects that demanded real physical wear and tear. By 2016, she had already shown her restraint in Chihayafuru, where her physical presence set the rhythm of the karuta card competition scenes.

Hirokazu Kore-eda called her in 2018 to join the cast of Shoplifters. In this Palme d'Or winner at Cannes, Matsuoka played Aki, a young woman who works at a strip club behind a one-way glass. The embrace-in-the-snow scene became one of the most analyzed moments in Japanese cinema of that decade.

Because Matsuoka understands that silence communicates more than a scream.

Figures and technical control

In 2019 she took on the challenge of Listen to the Universe, an adaptation of Riku Onda's novel about a piano competition. She spent months studying the posture and hand movements of professional pianists so that her portrayal of a traumatized prodigy would be believable without constant stunt doubles.

The film grossed more than 1,200 million yen at the Japanese box office. This financial success allowed her to be more selective with her contracts and to step away from the hollow commercial productions that tend to consume actresses of her generation before they turn thirty.

In 2023, she starred in Ichiko, a raw drama in which she plays a woman who disappears the day her partner proposes marriage. The shoot demanded a notable physical transformation and a complete refusal of makeup to capture the character's exhaustion. But Matsuoka has always preferred gritty realism to fashion-magazine glamour.

For 2024, her role in A Girl Named Ann confirmed her interest in stories about social marginalization and failed redemption. The film premiered at international festivals, and critics praised her ability to disappear into the role.

Matsuoka keeps a low profile away from the set and avoids the variety-show circuit that is usually mandatory for stars in Tokyo. Her current contract with the agency Hirata Office prioritizes film projects over TV commercials. In 2025, she plans to begin production on a period drama centered on the Meiji Restoration, with an estimated budget of 500 million yen.
