Masaki Okada was born in 1989 in the Shibuya district. He had no intention of pursuing acting, but an agent convinced him while he was walking down the street when he was still a high school student. His parents insisted that he finish his education before signing any long-term professional contract.

In 2006, he made his debut with minor roles on television. But in 2007, his part in the series Hanazakari no Kimitachi e gave him massive exposure among young audiences. The show reached screen shares above twenty percent during prime time in Japan.

But his looks weren't his only tool.

In 2007, filmmaker Nobuhiro Yamashita gave him his first major film role in Tennen Kokekko. He was eighteen and had a presence that threatened to pigeonhole him as a teen romance actor. The actor then decided to seek out projects that would test his psychological resilience.

Breaking Away from Leading Man Roles

In 2010, the release of Confessions changed the course of his career. He played a naive teacher who becomes the victim of his own students in a plot of school revenge. The film grossed 45 million dollars worldwide and forced critics to look beyond his image as an advertising poster boy.

Before accepting a script, he usually reads the dialogue aloud to study its rhythm. In 2012, he starred in Space Brothers alongside Shun Oguri. The shoot demanded real physical training to simulate zero gravity in vacuum chambers and controlled environments.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2014, he appeared in Oh! Father, playing a young man with four different fathers. It was a physical comedy exercise that showed he could handle much lighter tones without losing credibility. But his big international breakthrough would come a few years later with an auteur project.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Recognition

In 2021, he played Koushi Takatsuki in Drive My Car. Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi made him read the script dozens of times without putting any emotion into the lines during the early rehearsals. This technique aimed to let the character's truth emerge naturally in front of the camera lens.

The film won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2022. This led to offers for Okada from foreign production companies. But the actor preferred to focus on mid-budget Japanese cinema and avant-garde theater in Tokyo.

It was his passport to international film festivals.

In 2024, he starred in The Last Mile. It is a suspense drama set in a logistics center during the busiest holiday shopping days. The film used more than five hundred extras for the warehouse scenes and was shot entirely on real industrial locations to avoid the use of green screens.

In 2024, he also took part in the series 1122: For a Happy Marriage for digital platforms. The script explores the limits of modern marriage and open relationships in contemporary Japan. The production used Sony Venice 2 cameras to capture natural interior light without the need for additional lighting.

In 2025, he shot Angels on the Road under a crew that used exclusively anamorphic lenses from the 1970s. The film's final budget reached eight hundred million yen.
