Sophie Thatcher was born in 2000 into a Mormon family in Chicago. That rigid religious structure ended up fueling a creative rebellion that took her to the stage long before she came of age. She started out singing in the church choir, but her real interest was musical theater and the alternative culture she secretly consumed.
Music was his main plan.
Before turning eighteen, she had already decided that her future did not lie in her family's dogmas. She moved to New York and, shortly after, to Los Angeles to make a living through auditions that almost always ended in supporting roles. But in 2018, she landed the lead role in Prospect, a low-budget science fiction film in which she shared the screen with Pedro Pascal. That shoot in the Washington woods taught her that independent film was her natural habitat.
In 2019, she appeared in a couple of episodes of minor TV series. That gave her enough experience to take on her first major long-running project. Thatcher has always preferred characters with dark complexity over the bright heroines of big commercial productions.
The premiere of Yellowjackets in 2021 radically changed her career. Playing the younger version of Natalie Scatorccio demanded a physical and mental effort she had never experienced before. The series follows the aftermath of a plane crash, and Thatcher had to shoot extreme scenes in real freezing conditions. Her portrayal of a teenager struggling with addiction in the middle of a fight for survival was the most talked-about part of the first season.
Nobody expected that impact.
Her chemistry with Juliette Lewis, who played the same character as an adult, was key to the story's continuity. Thatcher studied Lewis's gestures and way of speaking so viewers wouldn't notice any gaps in the passage of time. But she didn't simply imitate her; she brought her own vulnerability, which set her apart from the rest of the young cast.
By 2022, her name was already on the lists of the actresses with the greatest potential of her generation. So offers for horror roles began arriving at her desk with unusual frequency. She accepted the challenge because horror let her explore emotions that conventional drama tends to ignore.
In 2023, she starred in The Boogeyman, an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King. The film was a modest box office hit and confirmed that Thatcher could draw young audiences to theaters. The contract for this production included very strict confidentiality clauses regarding the creature design, which the actress handled with complete professional discretion for months.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she appeared in MaXXXine, the final installment of Ti West's trilogy for A24. Sharing the set with Mia Goth firmly placed her at the center of contemporary genre cinema. But Thatcher didn't abandon her music career and kept developing her personal project, Nice Is Good, where she experiments with electronic sounds and confessional lyrics that have little to do with her public image.
In 2024, she also joined the cast of Heretic, alongside Hugh Grant. This A24 production took her back to the territory of psychological tension and confined spaces. Filming for this movie lasted exactly 35 days in locations in Vancouver on a mid-sized production budget.
