Patrick John Flueger was born in Red Wing and was already in front of Disney cameras before turning eighteen. In 2001, he played a teenager with red-dyed hair in The Princess Diaries. That quirky supporting role didn't define his future, but it got casting directors to take notice of his name.
It was his ticket out of Minnesota.
But teen movies were only a stepping stone. Between 2002 and 2003, he picked up brief guest spots on classic procedurals such as CSI: Miami and Boston Public. That work taught him the industry's rhythm before he made the leap to projects with more continuous storylines.
In 2004, USA Network gave him the role of Shawn Farrell in The 4400. The series explored the return of thousands of missing people, and Flueger carried the weight of being one of the main faces of the central plot. He worked on that production until 2007 and learned to handle the pressure of high-intensity television shoots.
And the gamble paid off.
During that period he also made his way into genre films. In 2009 he appeared in the drama Brothers alongside Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal. In 2011 he worked under Craig Brewer on the new version of Footloose, where he played Chuck Cranston. That role as a small-town antagonist allowed him to move away from the good-guy image he had built on television.
So his career settled on the line between character actor and weekly series leading man.
The year 2014 marked his definitive entry into Dick Wolf's universe. The producer was looking for fresh faces for Chicago P.D., and Flueger fit the profile of Adam Ruzek. The character started out as an impulsive rookie fresh out of the academy, assigned to an elite unit.
The relationship between Ruzek and the character Kim Burgess became one of the show's central storylines. But Flueger always preferred to focus on the physical evolution of his role. In 2017, he shot The Super (a horror thriller), where he shared the screen with Val Kilmer to explore darker roles outside the police uniform.
The character stayed with him.
In 2024, the series reached its twelfth season, confirming Flueger as one of the actors with the most airtime on American television. The production keeps a strict schedule of eight shooting days per episode on location. His salary per episode was adjusted under the union scales after the industry's latest technical pause.
