Shioli Kutsuna was born in Australia and landed in Tokyo at fourteen years old, barely speaking her parents' language. She took part in the national youth beauty pageant in 2006, and the first prize gave her a direct pass into television studios. But the process was slow, because she had to learn to read scripts in Japanese while finishing high school.
Her first major role came with the film adaptation of the manga Beck in 2010. The production called for a young presence somewhat outside Japan's social reserve. Kutsuna stood out for her ability to project an energy different from that of local actresses trained within the traditional agency system.
And it worked.
In 2013, she shot the Japanese version of Unforgiven under the direction of Lee Sang-il. Sharing the cast with Ken Watanabe was a technical validation that pulled her out of the teen drama circuit. Before turning twenty-five, she had already shot more than ten feature films in Japan, and her bilingual skills began to attract the interest of casting offices in Los Angeles.
Her entry into the global market was no accident or stroke of luck. In 2018 she played Yukio in Deadpool 2, and her character became a recurring asset to Marvel's storytelling. The contract required intense physical training to perform fight choreography she had never done in her previous work in Japan.
But the American market is a meat grinder for exotic profiles. Kutsuna avoided being typecast by appearing in Murder Mystery in 2019 alongside Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. It was a big-budget production where her role as Suzi Nakamura offered a dry counterpoint to the broad humor of the lead couple.
The industry changed its shooting schedules.
In 2021, she joined the cast of Invasion for Apple TV+. Her portrayal of Mitsuki Yamato is one of the series' central storylines and required her to shoot highly emotional scenes in isolated, high-tech settings. Filming for the second season stretched across much of 2023 in international locations.
Kutsuna keeps a careful distance from the Japanese tabloid press. Her contract with the agency Oscar Promotion ended in 2019, and since then she has managed her career with an independence rare in Tokyo's star system. This autonomy allows her to select projects that don't depend solely on her public image in Japan.
In 2024 she reprised her role as Yukio in Deadpool & Wolverine to strengthen her presence in franchise cinema. The production had an estimated budget of 200 million dollars and was shot mainly at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom.
