Brianna Hildebrand shaved her head in 2015 on pure personal instinct. She didn't know that this aesthetic gesture would fit the vision of Tim Miller for a film that would break box office records worldwide months later. That haircut earned her the role of Negasonic Teenage Warhead in Deadpool.
Her performance moved away from the usual conventions of Marvel superheroines. She didn't seek to please or project an image of physical perfection. She worked as the dry counterpoint to the constant jokes of Ryan Reynolds. And that attitude of a bored teenager was precisely what put her on the map of the international industry.
Audiences connected with that disdain.
In 2016 the film grossed more than 780 million dollars. But Hildebrand didn't wait around for the phone to ring only for big action productions. Before returning to the leather suits, she decided to explore psychological horror on television.
In 2017, she joined the cast of the second season of The Exorcist. She played Verity (a young girl in a foster home) and proved she could carry dramatic storylines without relying on special effects. It was a smart move to keep her career from getting stuck in superhero movies.
That same year, she starred in Tragedy Girls. The film is a bloody satire about the obsession with fame on social media. In this production, she shared the screen with Alexandra Shipp, and the two played psychopathic killers who seek digital validation through crime. She won the Best Actress award at the London FrightFest Film Festival for this role.
The industry stopped seeing her as a promising newcomer.
Her ability to move between genres became clear when she signed with Netflix in 2019. In the series Trinkets, she took on the role of Elodie Davis. The story dealt with kleptomania and grief from a raw perspective. Filming spanned two seasons and ended in 2020 to very favorable critical reception.
In 2021, she joined the final season of Lucifer. Her character (Rory) required a mix of physical rage and emotional vulnerability that Hildebrand handled with ease. It was her last major television venture before refocusing on the film universe that launched her professional career.
By 2024, she had returned to her best-known role in Deadpool & Wolverine. Filming took place at studios in London under strict secrecy and very strict contract terms. Her return confirmed the relevance of her character within the new structure of Disney and Marvel Studios.
And the gamble paid off.
Hildebrand keeps a low profile off the set. She rarely takes part in the Los Angeles party scene and prefers projects where the script matters more than the marketing budget. In 2024, her role in the third installment of the mutant franchise wrapped with a production budget that exceeded 200 million dollars.
