Kento Nagayama entered the Japanese industry when his older brother, Eita, was already a household name across Tokyo's marquees. He debuted in 2007 with the series Ojiisan-sensei without making much of a media splash. But the label of Eita's younger brother quickly began to fade, because his on-screen presence projected a different kind of composure.
In 2010 he starred in the film Softboy, and the result was a knockout punch to critics. That work earned him the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Newcomer. It was the exact moment casting directors stopped seeing a family resemblance and started seeing a face with a narrative presence of its own that didn't need grand gestures.
And the gamble paid off.
That recognition opened the doors of national television to him on a large scale. In 2011 he joined the cast of the morning drama Ohisama on NHK, a format that in Japan guarantees your face is in living rooms across the country every morning. Nagayama was not chasing the quick fame of teen magazines; he preferred supporting roles with edge.
For years he specialized in men who seem to carry an uncomfortable silence or who are on the verge of breaking. In 2016 he filmed Sanada Ten Braves, a samurai superproduction in which he proved he could handle the pace of action cinema without losing his restraint. But the global market came knocking a little later.
In 2017 he joined the cast of Hibana: Spark, the Netflix original series based on the novel by Naoki Matayoshi. His performance as Yamashita gave him visibility in the West. The series worked because it didn't try to imitate Hollywood style, and Nagayama fit perfectly into its atmosphere of gritty realism and professional failure.
His work pace remained steady, averaging three projects a year.
In 2021 he worked on Love You as the World Ends, and a year later he joined the cast of Double. In this latter production he played a stage actor who lives in the shadow of his partner, a role many critics read as an ironic reflection of his own early days in the profession.
Japan's entertainment industry maintains ethical standards that show no mercy for private mistakes. In June 2023, police arrested Nagayama at his home in Meguro, Tokyo, for marijuana possession. The impact on his career was immediate, and all of his commercial endorsements were canceled in less than twenty-four hours.
He was scheduled to take part in the historical drama Hikaru Kimi e in 2024, but the production company announced his immediate exit from the project after his arrest. As a result, his appearance in the second installment of the Tokyo Revengers franchise, released that same summer, became his last work before he disappeared from the public eye.
The trial was held quickly.
In September 2023, the Tokyo District Court handed down a sentence of six months in prison. The sentence was suspended for three years, which kept him out of jail on the condition that he maintain an impeccable record. At the oral hearing, the actor admitted he had been using the substance since age nineteen due to stress and sleep problems.
