The Body as a Working Tool

Nana Seino auditioned for Tokyo Tribe in 2014 without knowing her life was about to change over a purely physical detail. Sion Sono was looking for an actress who could really fight. She had been a teen model for the magazine Pichi Lemon, but she made it clear to the director that she could knock anyone out on set.

That audition was not a stroke of luck. Seino spent years training at a stunt school because she knew her sweet face was a double-edged sword in the Japanese industry. So she decided to break the mold with kicks and real acrobatics.

Risk is her currency.

In 2015, she starred in Nowhere Girl under the direction of Mamoru Oshii. The shoot was a test of endurance in which silence weighed more than dialogue. International critics began to take notice of this young woman who could hold the camera's gaze while performing choreography that would have broken the bones of any other actress her age.

But her career wasn't limited to action scenes. In 2017, she landed the lead role in the daytime drama Toto Nee-chan on NHK. It was a smart move that helped general audiences put a name to her face beyond the genre film circuit.

The international breakout on the small screen

And then the call from Netflix came.

Her role in Alice in Borderland in 2020 put her on screens across half the world. In the series, she plays Hikari Kuina, a character who demands extreme physical agility and restrained emotional depth. The production's impact was such that her name started to buzz in talent agencies outside Asia.

That same year, she announced her marriage to actor Toma Ikuta after five years of a low-key relationship. The Japanese press tried to turn her private life into a circus, but she kept a low profile. For Seino, work has always come before media noise.

In 2022, she took a necessary break from her career to become a mother. Many people thought her work pace would slow down or that she would step away from the more demanding action roles. They were wrong.

She returned to set with military-level discipline.

For the shoot of Kingdom II: Far and Away in 2022, she had to undergo sword training choreographed by Kenji Tanigaki. She did not use stunt doubles in the most dangerous sequences. Her performance as Kyokai earned the respect of special effects technicians, who praised her ability to move at speeds the camera could barely capture.

The weight of the industry in 2024

Her professional maturity came with projects where the script demanded more than sweat. In 2023, she starred in the drama Someday, I Will Say I Love You, proving she could carry a romantic storyline with ease. But the big milestone of this stage was her role in Kingdom: Return of the Great General, released in 2024.

This production closed out a cycle of intense shoots that stretched over months on rural locations in Japan and China. Seino became one of the highest-paid actresses of her generation thanks to her ability to attract both young audiences and fans of the original manga.

Despite her international fame, she keeps her home in Tokyo and avoids big red carpets unless absolutely necessary. She prefers to spend her time at the gym or studying scripts from independent writers who steer clear of the usual commercial circuits.

The film Kingdom: Return of the Great General took in more than $20 million at Japanese cinemas in its first ten days. Seino's contract for this installment included a physical exclusivity clause that kept her from taking on other projects during 18 months of nonstop production.
