Hayato Isomura never expected that a small local theater group in Numazu would be the start of everything. During high school, he decided that acting was not a weekend hobby. So he moved to Tokyo without a clear safety net, but with the determination of someone who has burned all their bridges.
The Japanese industry doesn't give away spaces.
In 2015, he landed the role of Alain in Kamen Rider Ghost. Productions like this are often the necessary toll young actors pay in Japan. But Isomura gave the character a dramatic weight that caught the attention of casting directors beyond the superhero genre. That role guaranteed him three years of nonstop work on national television.
In 2017, the NHK network selected him for the morning drama Hiyokko. Playing a cooking apprentice in Japan during the 60s required absolute restraint. Moving from the latex aesthetic to the sobriety of the postwar era is no simple transition for an actor of twenty-five.
For Isomura, acting has always been more about physical transformation than personal showmanship. In 2018, he accepted the role of a high school delinquent in Kyo Kara Ore Wa!!. The series was a massive hit and his public image changed dramatically. But he chose not to settle into light comedy.
And the risk paid off.
In 2021, he worked on A Family under director Michihito Fujii. His performance as Tsubasa, a young man trapped in the structures of the modern Yakuza, earned him the Best Newcomer Actor award at the Japan Academy Film Prize in 2022. It was the definitive proof of his dramatic weight in the eyes of the country's toughest critics.
That same year he appeared in Plan 75, a film about a government program that euthanizes the elderly. Isomura played the official in charge of processing the requests with a coldness that was painfully cutting. The film competed at the Cannes Film Festival and put his name on the international art-house film circuit.
His interest in the creative process doesn't stop in front of the camera. In 2022, he made his debut as a short film director within the Actors Short Film 2 project from the Wowow platform. He directed Scent of a Man and personally supervised the final edit to understand how editing rhythm affects an actor's performance.
In 2023, he returned to raw social drama with The Moon. The film deals with systematic violence in care facilities for people with disabilities. For this shoot, Isomura lost weight and isolated himself from the rest of the cast during the weeks of location filming.
The physical effort took its toll on his health for months.
In 2024, he joined the cast of the series Extremely Inappropriate!, produced by TBS. The production used Sony Venice 2 cameras with full-frame sensors to capture the texture of the Tokyo night scenes. Isomura's contract included an exclusivity clause for promoting the series in Asian markets during the first half of the year.
