Anneliese van der Pol was born in Naaldwijk, but her passport tells a bigger story about her career in California than about her Dutch roots. Her name is a direct tribute to Anne Frank. That historical weight contrasts with the lightness of her first roles at Disney, where she landed after years of training in musical theater.
In 2003, she signed the contract to play Chelsea Daniels in the series That’s So Raven. She was the eco-minded, slightly scatterbrained best friend who balanced out the lead's visions. The cast's chemistry carried the show through exactly one hundred episodes, making it the first series in the network's history to reach that production milestone.
And the numbers don't lie.
Her move into youth television didn't stop her ambitions on the New York stage. In 2007, she made her Broadway debut as the final Belle in the original production of Beauty and the Beast at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. It was a strategic move to step away from canned laughter and prove her vocal ability to the toughest critics on the East Coast.
That same year, she appeared in the movie Bratz as Avery. The project was a resounding box office flop. The film barely grossed $26 million against a budget of over 20 million, not counting promotional expenses.
After her setback in mainstream film, she sought refuge in smaller-scale theater productions with greater acting depth. In 2009, she headlined the musical Vanities at the Second Stage Theatre. The show didn't have the run it hoped for on Broadway, but it allowed her to shed the child-actor label in the eyes of casting directors in independent film and theater.
In 2010, she tried her hand at parody with Vampires Suck. The film set out to mock the Twilight phenomenon and, although critics tore it apart, it managed to triple its budget at the box office. But her career then entered a phase of smaller projects and short films that kept her away from the spotlight for nearly five years.
Television came calling again in 2017.
Disney Channel decided to revive its most profitable franchise and premiered Raven’s Home. Van der Pol returned to her role as Chelsea, this time as a divorced mother sharing an apartment with her best friend. The comeback was a nostalgic exercise that drew in the original audience and a new generation of digital viewers.
In 2021, the actress left the main cast of the series after four seasons on air. The writers explained her absence with a storyline about her character traveling, but the reality pointed to a shift in the production's direction. From that point on, she focused her efforts on audio formats and live performances.
In 2022, she appeared in the sketch series Johnno and Michael Try, showing that her timing for quick comedy was still sharp. But the real turning point came with the launch of her podcast Big Name B*tches in 2023 alongside Raven-Symoné. The show takes a cynical, business-minded look at the inner workings of the industry.
And the audience responded positively to the format.
In 2024, the actress maintains her residence in Los Angeles and manages the rights to her musical performances on streaming platforms. Her catalog includes tracks recorded for soundtracks that rack up millions of streams each year. Syndication deals for her former series secure her financial stability, so she doesn't need to accept supporting roles in low-budget productions.
