The kid who didn't want to be just a pretty face

Asher Angel didn’t come out of the Burbank studio lots. His real training took place at the Desert Stages Theatre in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he performed in more than thirty musical productions before Hollywood knew how to spell his name. That intensive training period helped him develop a physical control that many actors of his generation simply don’t have.

Theater was his training ground.

In 2017, the Disney Channel cast him to play Jonah Beck in the series Andi Mack. The show broke some of the molds of youth television by tackling identity and mental health with unusual seriousness. Angel played the role for three seasons and built a massive following on social media. But his ambitions went beyond teen sitcoms.

Big-budget films soon became part of the picture.

In 2019, Shazam! hit theaters, and the world watched Angel take on the emotional weight of the DC universe. Playing Billy Batson required a delicate balance between the drama of an orphaned boy and the physical comedy needed to fit in with Zachary Levi. Critics praised his ability to keep the story believable in a production that cost close to $100 million.

Making the leap to DC productions

Filming in Toronto was demanding because Angel had to coordinate every gesture with Levi so that both would look like the same person in different bodies. That film grossed more than 360 million dollars worldwide. So a sequel was inevitable. In 2023, he returned to the role in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a film that explored the character’s maturity and his fear of losing his foster family.

But the studio system is volatile.

After the leadership changes at DC Studios, the future of the characters from that period was left up in the air. Angel didn’t wait around for a call from the executives and began looking for projects in independent film and genre drama. In 2022, he appeared in Darby and the Dead for Hulu, in a role meant to move away from his previous image.

The industry often devours child prodigies.

In 2023, he starred in On Fire alongside Peter Facinelli. The film follows a family's struggle to survive a forest fire and demanded considerable physical effort from the cast. Filming among ash and artificial smoke was a dramatic change from the green screens of superhero productions. Angel wanted to get his face dirty and prove he could carry a survival drama.

From red leotards to auteur cinema

In 2024, he appeared in Lazareth, a thriller directed by Alec Tibaldi, where he shared the screen with Ashley Judd. The production was shot in rural locations in Oregon to make the most of natural light and the oppressive atmosphere of the forest. Because Angel’s goal at this stage is to work with directors who prioritize storytelling over computer-generated visual effects.

That same year, he joined the cast of The Last Showgirl under the direction of Gia Coppola. Filming took place in Las Vegas, and the film explores the end of an era in the entertainment world. Working with a director from the Coppola family is a strategic move for breaking into the circuit of prestigious international film festivals.

Angel has also maintained a parallel music career since releasing his first single in 2019. His music videos have millions of views, but he insists that acting is his absolute priority. He has managed his public image to stay clear of the scandals that often surround young actors in Los Angeles.

The production of The Last Showgirl used Arri Alexa Mini cameras to capture the decay of Nevada’s casinos on a budget of less than five million dollars.
