Synopsis of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

Set in a fictional version of East High School, the Salt Lake City (Utah) high school where the original movies were filmed, the series follows a group of teenagers passionate about theater. Miss Jenn, a former extra in those movies, arrives as the new theater teacher and decides that her first winter production will be High School Musical: The Musical, to celebrate the school's connection to the original film. Nini, a fan of musicals, and Ricky, a guitarist and skater with no interest in the genre, end up in the lead roles of the show. As they rehearse, the students must navigate their personal relationships and build bonds with one another. Created by Tim Federle for Disney+, the series stars Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo, Sofia Wylie and Kate Reinders in its main cast.

Trivia about High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

Disney approached Tim Federle, who pitched the series as a documentary in January 2018, according to the production's original concept.

The simultaneous sneak preview of the first episode was watched by 474,000 people on Disney Channel and 293,000 on Freeform, according to the series' ratings data.

The mockumentary is shot with a single camera, using handheld cameras that produce shaky footage and zooms to achieve the series' style.

Rodrigo wrote an original song for the first season, “All I Want,” and co-wrote “Just for a Moment” with Joshua Bassett and producer Dan Book.

Lucas Grabeel, who played Ryan Evans in the original saga, appears in the series as a fictional version of himself after his participation was confirmed.

The series won a GLAAD Media Award, six Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and was nominated for fourteen Daytime and Family Emmy Awards.

Tim Federle decided to end the series with the fourth season to keep the cast and crew from being left in limbo with no guarantee of renewal; Disney+ premiered it as the final season on August 9, 2023.

The fourth season brought in Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh, plus Lucas Grabeel, all playing themselves in the series.
