In 2016, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio was working the register at a supermarket in Vega Baja while memorizing framings for his audiovisual communication classes at the University of Puerto Rico. That technical training in Arecibo explains his eye for the cinematic shot far better than the usual stories about lucky talent. By the time his music was breaking records on digital platforms, the Puerto Rican already understood focal length, three-point lighting and the narrative weight of off-screen space.

Hollywood tends to devour singers who play at being actors.

But Benito understood the film industry from the trenches of the craft. He wasn't looking for decorative cameos to sell tickets to his fans. He turned down predictable offers until in 2021 he agreed to play Arturo Páez in the third season of Narcos: Mexico. His TV debut avoided the caricature of the 1990s drug trafficker thanks to a physical restraint that surprised the directing team.

Knife Fights and Mud in the Sand

During pre-production of Bullet Train in 2021, director David Leitch put his physical abilities to the test with a rigorous hand-to-hand combat program. The choreography in the train car called for a knife fight against Brad Pitt in a hallway barely five feet wide. Benito refused stunt doubles for the medium shots and front-facing angles. He spent weeks taking hits on the set's crash mats to nail the editing rhythm the scene required.

And the move paid off cleanly.

The scene worked on the big screen because the performer accepted his place in the ensemble of the film. He did not demand extra lines or condescending wardrobe. Box office returns brought in more than 239 million dollars in 2022, earning him professional credibility within the studios without having to resort to prefabricated romantic comedies.

His leap to independent film came in 2023 under the direction of Roger Ross Williams in Cassandro. Benito took on the role of Felipe, a drug dealer romantically tied to the gay wrestler played by Gael García Bernal. Shooting in Ciudad Juárez dispensed with aesthetic frills. The handheld camera demanded tight close-ups and long silences, where any false gesture could ruin the take.

Art-house cinema demanded a different skin.

The Corporate Stumble and the Auteur Clapperboard

In April 2022, the top brass at Sony Pictures announced his signing to star in El Muerto, a superhero spin-off tied to the Spider-Man franchise. It was a risky move in the Burbank offices. The project lacked a finished script, faced pre-production delays and threatened to tie up his schedule with large-scale promotional commitments. After several months of disagreements over the tone of the storyline, Benito formally stepped away from the lead role in 2023 to keep control of his creative time.

So he redirected his investment toward executive producing and creative decisions. He financed the screen adaptation of the book Al final mueren los dos and waited for projects with proven, high-profile filmmakers. In 2024 Darren Aronofsky cast him in the feature film Caught Stealing alongside Austin Butler, plunging him into a dry, gritty New York crime drama.

In 2024, he also agreed to shoot with Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 to explore American physical comedy. Benito approached the absurd humor with the same technical discipline he had applied to his WWE wrestling matches. After all, classic comedy timing doesn't forgive a millisecond's lag in a punchline.

For the shots of Caught Stealing, filmed in the fall of 2024 in the Queens subway tunnels, the production scheduled fourteen night shoots with 35 Arri Alexa cameras and anamorphic lenses, on a daily operating budget of $180,000.
