The Weight of Being the Perfect Son

Barry Watson arrived in Los Angeles at nineteen with the hunger of someone who knows they have no Plan B. It didn't take long for him to string together small parts in filler series until Aaron Spelling noticed his square jaw. In 1996 he signed the contract that would change his bank account forever by joining the cast of 7th Heaven. That family drama worked as a refuge for conservative America at the end of the century, and Watson became the eldest son every mother wanted to have.

But the actor wanted more than Sunday sermons and wool sweaters. In 1999 he tried to break into mainstream film with Secuestrando a la señorita Tingle alongside Helen Mirren. Working with a veteran of that caliber was an accelerated masterclass in acting that helped him understand the industry's inner workings. That movie grossed barely 14 million dollars against a budget double that figure. It was his first real encounter with the volatility of box office success in Hollywood.

It was a reality check.

A Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis in 2002 abruptly halted his rise just as his name was starting to be considered for bigger projects. Watson had to leave the set of his main series to focus on aggressive chemotherapy treatment. He spent months between waiting rooms and medication sessions while his character intermittently disappeared from the story. He returned to work in 2003 with short hair and a far more intense gaze than in the show's early episodes.

A Home in Cable TV

After leaving the Camden family nest, he sought to lead a series on his own with What About Brian in 2006. The show was produced by J.J. Abrams and was supposed to become the new benchmark for generational drama, but audiences turned their backs on it after two short seasons. Watson took the failure in stride, quietly. By then he already knew that survival in television depends more on syndication contracts than on the applause of specialized critics.

In 2007 he tried his luck at pure comedy with Samantha Who? alongside Christina Applegate. His comedic range worked better than many casting directors expected. He was no longer the teen heartthrob of the nineties, and his look was starting to fit roles as a young father or a professional with romantic troubles. But the writers' strike that year and schedule changes ultimately sank the project in 2009.

And then came a relative silence.

In 2012 he joined the cast of Gossip Girl to play Serena van der Woodsen's boyfriend during the show's final season. It was a strategic move to remind major studios that he was still active and available for the youth market. So he alternated guest appearances on series such as Hart of Dixie with TV movies that paid the bills without demanding much red carpet promotion.

His portrayal of Lachlan Murdoch in the miniseries The Loudest Voice in 2019 marked a complete change of register. He appeared with a sober look, far from his heartthrob image, to play the heir to the Fox empire. In 2022 he joined the superhero series Naomi, produced by Ava DuVernay for The CW. The show lasted only one season before being canceled due to the network's internal restructuring after its sale.

Watson lives in the Los Angeles hills with his wife Natasha Gregson Wagner. In 2024, he keeps a low profile and chooses cable TV projects that won't require him to spend months away from his California home. The syndication contract from his former series lets him turn down mediocre scripts without his finances suffering the consequences.
