Bel Powley didn't ask for permission to enter the industry quietly. At the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, the 23-year-old British actress stunned Park City as Minnie Goetze in The Diary of a Teenage Girl. The film, about a teenager's sexual awakening in 1970s San Francisco, didn't seek to please audiences. But Powley handled the script's rawness with a naturalness that unsettled even the most conservative critics.
She grew up in an environment where film was part of everyday life. Her father is actor Mark Powley and her mother is casting director Janis Jaffa. So the world of film sets was never a mystery to her while she studied at Holland Park School in London.
And the gamble paid off.
Before that breakout in the United States, she had already worked on the teen series M.I. High between 2007 and 2008. But her real interest had always been in characters who walk along the edge of emotional despair. In 2015, she also took part in A Royal Night Out, playing Princess Margaret. It was a radical contrast that proved she could move from independent grit to royal protocol without missing a beat.
The industry often typecasts actresses known for physical expressiveness. Powley avoided this by choosing projects where dramatic weight rests on dialogue. In 2017, she starred in Mary Shelley and Carrie Pilby. In the latter, she played a gifted young woman struggling to fit in in New York. The film earned just 19,000 dollars in its limited release in American theaters, but it helped her gain traction with producers.
High-budget television came knocking in 2019 with The Morning Show. On the Apple TV+ series, she brought Claire Conway to life over the first two seasons. Sharing the set with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon marked a major jump in her global visibility. But Bel Powley decided to return to Europe to look for stories with a deeper political weight.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
In 2022, she starred in the adaptation of Everything I Know About Love, based on Dolly Alderton's memoir. The series captured the essence of female friendship in London, but Powley was looking for something denser. In 2023, she appeared in A Small Light, playing Miep Gies (the woman who helped hide Anne Frank's family during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam).
This role posed a technical challenge, as it required balancing heroism with the everyday reality of fear. The production shot much of the scenes on real locations across Europe to preserve the historical accuracy that Powley demanded from the script. It was a long and physically exhausting shoot that ultimately shaped her maturity as an actress in front of the camera.
In 2024, she premiered the thriller Cold Copy, directed by Roxine Helberg. The film explores journalistic ethics and the pursuit of success at any cost. Bel Powley signed a contract for the production Encore in 2025 with an estimated budget of €15 million.
