Bill Cobbs didn't step onto a film set until life had already taken him through many turns. Before becoming an actor, he spent eight years in the Air Force as a radar technician and sold cars in Cleveland. He didn't feel the urgency of young aspiring actors.
He arrived in New York in 1970. He was thirty-six years old with a clear goal that did not include red carpets. He joined the Negro Ensemble Company to work with figures such as Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis.
And the gamble paid off.
He landed his first film role in 1974 with The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. It was a brief appearance, but enough for the industry to notice his stern face and deep voice. Still, widespread recognition would take another decade to arrive on a steady basis.
In 1992 he played Bill Devaney in The Bodyguard. He was the manager trying to restore order amid the chaos of Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. That role defined his public image for the rest of his life.
Cobbs specialized in authority figures and mentors who never needed to shout to command respect. He appeared in more than 190 projects across film and television over five decades of nonstop work.
He worked under the Coen brothers in 1994 on The Hudsucker Proxy. There he played Moses, the clock keeper who served as the story's narrator. His calm physical presence was something directors constantly sought out.
But his face became familiar to children in 2006.
He played Reginald in Night at the Museum alongside Ben Stiller and Robin Williams. The movie's success allowed him to reprise the role in the 2014 sequel, cementing a run of beloved characters that brought him global recognition.
In 2020 he won a Daytime Emmy for his work on the educational series Dino Dana. He was eighty-six years old when he received the award, and he kept accepting scripts that appealed to him for their simplicity.
He never sought absolute stardom. He preferred to be the supporting player who holds the scene together when the lead falters. As a result, his name appears in credits for productions as varied as That Thing You Do! and Oz the Great and Powerful in 2013.
For him, acting was a trade much like selling cars or repairing radar equipment.
Bill Cobbs died on June 25, 2024, at his home in Riverside, California. He was 90 years old.
