For years, Bonnie Aarons heard that her nose and her look would close every door at the major studios. New York agents frequently suggested she find another line of work or go under the knife, since her look didn't fit the beauty standards of the late twentieth century. But she decided that her features would be her most powerful work tool.
Her time in Europe was essential in shaping a character that the American industry never quite understood. In cities like Hamburg, she shot short films and commercials while waiting for a real break in genre cinema. Her big-screen debut came in 1994 with the film Exit to Eden, in which she played a prostitute in a brief role.
The industry was never kind to her.
David Lynch saw something in her that conventional casting directors had completely overlooked. In Mulholland Drive, released in 2001, Aarons played a homeless man behind a restaurant in one of the most analyzed horror scenes in modern film history. That appearance lasted just a few seconds on screen.
That was enough for her face to be etched into viewers' memories.
Indeed, her ability to convey unease without relying on heavy prosthetics caught the attention of other filmmakers. She appeared in The Princess Diaries in 2001, directed by Garry Marshall, playing Baroness Joy von Troken. That role showed she could handle sharp comedy as confidently as suspense.
Her career took a major turn in 2016. James Wan chose her to play the demon Valak in The Conjuring 2 after the team scrapped a last-minute digital design that didn't quite convince them. The studio wanted something tangible, and Aarons brought a physical presence on set that CGI couldn't replicate.
The success of that supporting character was so overwhelming that Warner Bros decided to produce a spin-off focused entirely on her. In 2018, The Nun was released, and the film grossed more than $365 million worldwide despite mixed reviews. The actress went from a recurring supporting player to leading a million-dollar franchise.
But financial success doesn't always translate into fair treatment from the major studios. In 2023, the actress filed a formal lawsuit against Warner Bros. for failing to pay the merchandising profits tied to the use of her image. Her contract stipulated that she was owed a proportional share of sales of any products that used her face.
The lawsuit alleged that the company concealed the real revenue figures from toy licensing and official merchandise. This legal battle highlighted the usual tensions between supporting actors and corporations in the era of franchise filmmaking. The case thus became a landmark for other performers in similar situations.
Aarons doesn't use traditional method acting techniques for her horror roles. She prefers to work on body language and absolute stillness to build tension on screen. As she has explained in various technical interviews, her goal is for the viewer to feel the pressure of a look before any sudden movement happens.
And the gamble paid off.
Outside the Warren files universe, she took part in projects such as Jakob's Wife in 2021, where she played The Master. In this independent production, she revisited the vampire archetype from a raw, highly visual perspective. Her presence in low-budget cinema has been steady, helping her keep her creative independence away from restrictive contracts.
Filming The Nun II in 2023 marked her return to the character that brought her international fame, on a production budget of $38 million. The film finished its theatrical run with worldwide box office earnings of over $269 million, according to official box office data. The actress earned a flat fee for her work plus a variable percentage tied to the net profits from commercial exploitation.
