Bradford Dillman was never the kind of star who chased easy applause from the public. He had an impeccable academic background at Yale and a stint in the Marine Corps that gave him an iron discipline. In 1953 he joined the Actors Studio, where he began to shape that very distinctive screen presence.
His big break came with Compulsion in 1959. He played one of two students who commit a murder out of sheer intellectual superiority. He won the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actor, sharing the honor with Orson Welles and Dean Stockwell.
The industry believed he was the new James Dean.
But Dillman didn't want to be a teen idol. He signed with 20th Century Fox and took on a string of projects that tested his ability to unsettle audiences. In Francisco de Asís, shot in 1961, he tried to switch gears, but audiences preferred seeing him in more complex, darker roles.
During the 1970s he became an indispensable face in action and low-budget horror films. He appeared in Escape from the Planet of the Apes in 1971 and soon after in Piranha. His ability to work under pressure earned him the respect of directors such as Don Siegel.
In 1976 he shared the screen with Clint Eastwood in The Enforcer. He played Captain McKay, a bureaucrat who constantly clashed with Harry Callahan's heavy-handed methods. It was a box office hit that grossed 46 million dollars in the United States alone.
Dillman was the perfect counterpoint to Eastwood's toughness.
His style didn't rely on muscle but on an authoritative voice and a gaze that could turn icy in an instant. In 1983 he worked with Eastwood again in Sudden Impact. By then, he was one of the most reliable character actors in the American film industry.
His personal life was far more stable than the characters he played. He was married to model and actress Suzy Parker from 1963 until her death in 2003. They had three children and lived away from the media spotlight of Los Angeles, at their home in Santa Barbara.
He did it all because he knew how to do it all.
He retired from acting in the mid-1990s after appearing in an episode of Murder, She Wrote in 1995. He spent his later years writing and published a memoir in which he dissected his time at the major studios. He died in Santa Barbara on January 16, 2018 from complications of pneumonia at the age of 87.
